AC redux. $700! Yay

#1 Post by Beebs52 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 11:23 am

Last night it made a jet pack blower sound outside. Turned off. Jeff said something was frozen on the compressor. Turned on and worked for a bit then buzzed.
Dude came out, blower in attic which is ancient needs replacement. Includes capacitor. Blahblah.
Coulda been worse. Hopefully fixed before tonite since it's 800 degrees out.
Well, then

Always good to have a problem with a less cost than expected solution.

I had one the other night.

Mom: Caroline, did you tell Dad about your car?
Me: <eyes raised>
Caroline: No
Me: What?!!! <me thinking "crap, more money out the door!">
Caroline: So....the other night.....when I turned on my headlights, my dashboard lights went out. When I turned the headlights off, my dash lights comeback on. Never done that before. I could either see the road or see how fast I was going, but not both. You'll be happy to know I chose to see the road.
Me: <silence with annoyed facial expression>
Mom: Brad, what do you think about that?
Me: Probably needs to be fixed. <....but not until we pay the Amex bill from y'all's trip to Europe>
Caroline: Ya, think?
Me: <really annoyed look>

<fade out> <fade in the next evening>
Mom: Caroline, did you ever show Dad your car?
Me: <crap, that again?>
Caroline: No
Me: <annoyed looking> Come on, let's go look at it.

So we go outside, it's dark, Caroline gets in her car and tells me to get in the passenger seat.
She starts the car. Dash lights on. Turns on the headlights. Dash lights off. Turns back on headlights. Dash lights off.

Caroline: See? Pretty annoying, huh?
Me. Just a second.

I get out of the car, walk around to the driver side, open the door and start looking around. <I'm not real familiar with the car but I know what I'm looking for.>
While the headlight are on, and dashboard lights out, I reach in just to the left of the steering wheel and roll a small dial all the way down. Dash lights come on!

She had inadvertently dimmed her dash light down to nothing. I explained that in the daytime (with the lights off) the dash is lit up so it can be seen in the daylight.

Total cost of repair? $0.00
Smug look on my face: priceless
