Fortnite World Cup

#1 Post by christie1111 » Mon Jul 29, 2019 1:42 pm

My 15 y.o. nephew qualified in the top 100 globally and was invited to play in NYC last weekend.

He won $100,000 between the Duo (Sat) and Singles (Sun) competitions. 4DRStorm (nephew)and his partner EpicShark came in 12th and split the $100,000 for the Duos game. Storm came in 39th in the singles but he had been in 22nd and in the next round EpicShark killed him just as they went down to 50 active players. EpicShark ended up 3rd in the singles and won $1.2 million to add to his split of the Duo competition.

We watched from home as we went to see everyone on Friday night in NYC. Son1111 hooked up the Twitch to the living room TV so the viewing was comfortable. Sister1111 and her husband came for the weekend (they fly free) and was at each day of the competition.

I had never seen the game before so there was a learning curve to understand was happening but it was very interesting and somewhat stressful looking for his name while he was playing.

The 1st place winner for the singles got $3M and is 16. Amazing.

What we could see on TV that the had totally tricked out Arthur Ashe stadium. It looked amazing and my sister said it was,

I doubt this is going to be the last time he plays competitively as he has won money before this and definitely has some skills.

https://www.twingalaxies.com/feed_detai ... vegas-18/6 Apparently this was a very big deal (cluless).

Most all of them said one thing they were using their prize money for was to up grade their systems.

It looks like there's going to be a shortage of GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition cards. ($1200 each)

This made the front page of the Los Angeles Times. It's a really big deal, particularly considering that until seeing christie's earlier thread, it's something I'd never heard of either. --Bob

Amazing that there's so much prize money involved.

It's a brave, new world!

Congratulations to 4DRStorm!

100 Grand is a pretty nice payday, besides being the name of one of my favorite candy bars (100 Grand, not Payday).

Kudos and congratulations to him!

That came out just last week, did they get a beta version?

Not that I know anything but googling shows it was released in 201.8. Not sure about super refresh version...

I omitted "Super" which was released four weeks ago. The original one was released on September 20, 2018.

I guess the point is that given his gaming savvy, and $ from tournaments, he is pretty much up on the technology.

He has a group of people he plays with in order for them to practice and they are big names in Fortnite. So I am sure they trade info quite a bit. My nephew isn't sponsored but so many of them are. In fact, in the Duos competition when he finished 12th with his teammate, he was the only one who didn't have a sponsor. That may change because he spent the whole week in NYC practicing at a site owned by a sponsor.
