The Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees will play a major league baseball game on August 13 next season on the site of the Field of Dreams in Iowa. Since the Kevin Costner movie, the field has been maintained as a tourist attraction that has hosted a variety of celebrity and charity games and concerts over the years. MLB will construct an 8,000 seat temporary stadium for the game (something tells me these tickets will be very hard to get). They will also have to reconfigure the existing layout to MLB minimum specifications and presumably install some sort of fence to keep outfielders from running into the corn that's growing in the outfield. The game is a White Sox home game on a Thursday, and the series will resume in Chicago on Saturday and Sunday.

As I said on Facebook, they gotta get James Earl Jones to be the public address announcer. I'm guessing Kevin Costner will throw out the first pitch. Hopefully no one chokes on a hot dog. Burt Lancaster isn't around anymore to save the day.

There is much questioning of Jackson's level of involvement in the Black Sox scandal. He was not a very intelligent man. His stats and errorless play certainly don't seem to fit the profile of someone trying to throw a game. As this article states, if he was trying to throw games, he did a pretty crappy job.

I don't know as if I'd say they made a hero of him. My takeaway from the film is that he just wanted to play baseball and was given a second chance. The whole movie was about second chances, and it was masterful in my opinion, how the emotional payoffs increased with each resolution of the various second chances. The final one absolutely devastated me.

At any rate, many accounts seem to indicate that Charles Comiskey was a tight-fisted asshole.

I disagreed with that, where he was as much complaining about the casting as anything.

Today, he listed nine other baseball movies he thinks are dreck, and where they should be played. I have only seen his No. 9, and agree it was pretty bad. The others, I won't be watching, either.

But my all-time worst baseball movie is ... "Pride of the Yankees," in which they make zero effort to change Gary Cooper's hair at different ages, and in which he ran to third base and they flipped the film, because he couldn't learn to hit lefty.

I love Bull Durham without qualification. It is quoted at Casa Sprots almost as much as Christmas Story is. OK, more in the summer. "I can get us a rainout." "It's a simple game. You throw the ball. However, as much as I love it, I have to agree with RedRaider (I'll call him that because he graduated from Texas Tech). It's not a baseball movie. I love it anyway.
