The Yankees have lost 77 games so New York cannot win more than 85 games. Baltimore has won 97 games so the Yankees cannot win the American League Eastern Division. The Rays and the Blue Jays each have won at least 87 games so New York will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division. Texas has won 87 games. The Astros have won 85 games, the Mariners have won 84 games, and Houston and Seattle have three games remaining against each other, so at least one of those two teams will win at least 86 games and the Yankees will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division.

Start spreadin' the news. The Yankees have been toastified. --Bob

Pittsburgh has lost 82 games so the Pirates cannot win more than 80 games. Milwaukee has won 88 games so Pittsburgh cannot win the National League Central Division. Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Miami each have won at least 81 games so the Pirates will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the National League Eastern Division. The Cubs have won 82 games so Pittsburgh will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Central Division.

There will be no October baseball in Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood this year. The Pirates have been toastified. --Bob

I like my Astros' chances. The remainder of the year they play 6 games with Kansas City (.306) and 3 games with Oakland (.308) and Texas and Seattle still have 7 games against each other and Texas plays 4 games against Toronto (.559) and Seattle 3 against the Dodgers (.613).
1-4 against the two worst teams in baseball so far. What a jinx!

San Francisco has lost 80 games so the Giants cannot win more than 82 games. The Dodgers have won 97 games so the Giants cannot win the National League Western Division. Arizona has won 83 games so the Giants will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Atlanta and Philadelphia each have won at least 88 games so San Francisco will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Eastern Division. Milwaukee has won 88 games and the Cubs have won 82 games.

The Giants finished 1-5 against Chicago this year, and their record against Cincinnati and Miami (the only other teams that could join the Giants and Cubs in a tie at 82 wins) is not good enough for them to reach .500 in head-to-head games against any combination that includes the Cubs, so the Giants cannot win a tie-break and they will finish behind or lose a tie-break to at least one other non-division winner.

No need to worry about post-season games getting fogged out by the Bay. The Giants have been toastified. --Bob

San Diego has lost 80 games this year so the Padres cannot win more than 82 games. The Dodgers have won 98 games so San Diego cannot win the National League Western Division. Arizona has won 84 games so the Padres will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Miami each have won at least 83 games so San Diego also will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the National League Eastern Division.

Time for San Diego sports fans to focus on football. (Wait, what?) The Padres have been toastified. --Bob

The Cubs have lost 78 games so Chicago cannot win more than 84 games. Milwaukee has won 91 games so the Cubs cannot win the National League Central Division. Atlanta and Philadelphia each have won at least 89 games so Chicago will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Eastern Division. Los Angeles has won 99 games and Arizona has won 84 games, so the Cubs can do no better than tying at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Miami has won 84 games so the Cubs can do no better than tying at least one other non-division winner in the National League Eastern Division.

Chicago has lost the season series to Miami, Cincinnati, and Arizona (the only possible participants in a tie-break with the Cubs for a playoff position) so the Cubs cannot win any applicable tie-break.

The Windy City will not have baseball in October. Chicago has been toastified. --Bob

Seattle has lost 74 games so the Mariners cannot win more than 88 games. Texas has won 90 games so Seattle cannot win the American League Western Division. The Astros have won 88 games so the Mariners will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division. Baltimore, Tampa Bay, and Toronto all have won at least 89 games so Seattle also will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division.

It'll be a considerable distance from the Space Needle to any October baseball. The Mariners have been toastified. --Bob

Cincinnati has lost 79 games so the Reds cannot win more than 83 games. The Brewers have won 91 games so the Reds cannot win the National League Central Division. Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Miami all have won at least 84 games so Cincinnati will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers and the Diamondbacks each have won at least 84 games so the Reds will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division.

The Queen City will have no October baseball. Cincinnati has been toastified. --Bob

And now playing in their 7th straight ALCS, an AL record.

I guarantee a team from Texas will be playing in the World Series.
