RIP Bob Barker

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Sat Aug 26, 2023 11:58 am

Bob Barker has passed away at age 99. As one wag on Facebook put it, he lived as close as possible to 100 without going over. --Bob

The Price Is Right had been taping at the same Hollywood studio where CBS shows like Carol Burnett and the Smothers Brothers were taped. That studio was named after Barker in 1998. However, the show is moving to a new studio in Glendale (I'm not sure how these two locations relate to each other in terms of distance) for the new season which begins next month. I hadn't heard anything about naming the new stucio, but I would guess they would also name it after Barker, especially now.

The old studio is literally walking distance from my apartment and is the subject of a large redevelopment project (it will remain a studio). Glendale is 30-90 minutes away, depending on traffic and your ability to navigate surface streets through the hills instead of depending on a freeway. --Bob

No, but Los Feliz doesn't require navigation.

Typical tone-deafness. Vandal was implying the back and forth about street directions shouldn’t be in a thread meant to honor the dead.

Bob Barker is one of my first and best television memories because of Truth or Consequences. "You didn't tell the truth, now you must pay the consequences."

Barker would ask a joke question of the contestants, and it was answered "correctly" only one time that I remember: Q: "What can any man make in his workshop?" A: "A mess." So he oh so suavely pulled out an alternate question, which of course they missed.

From time to time, not very often, he would mention Truth or Consequences, NM, the town that changed its name from Hot Springs to collect some prizes, one of which was a fairly sizeable cash award, if I recall correctly. They had to leave the name the same for 25 years, again IIRC, but when the time was up, they kept it!

I thought Barker was the best television host ever, first on Truth or Consequences and then when he moved on to Price is Right.

I was listening to a podcast ep a few days ago about the Toy Box Killer and it involved Truth or Consequences, NM. The podcasters had only the vaguest idea that it was a radio show or some such and I felt so damned old!
