Lyrically Speaking - 2/1/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 01, 2024 7:08 am

The 1970's are front and center for our Thursday game, and the wheel of random landed on the year 1971! This was about the year my Mom and Dad met at the drive in they were working at during their high school years, so I was that proverbial gleam in the eye. For the rest of you older folks, you just might actually remember when a lot of these songs were shiny and new. They were all released in 1971, or at least big on the charts that year...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Ooh, baby, when I see your face
Mellow as the month of May
Oh, darling, I can't stand it
When you look at me that way

2. All my friends had to ask me
Something they didn't understand
How I get all the women
In the palm of my hand

3. I really want to know you (hallelujah)
Really want to go with you (hallelujah)

4. You swear you've heard it before
As it slowly rambles on
No need in bringing 'em back
'Cause they've never really gone

5. She's got something that moves my soul
And she knows I'd love to love her
But she lets me down every time

6. I'm a-tellin' you beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back

7. Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by
I say to myself, "You're such a lucky guy"
To have a girl like her is truly a dream come true
Out of all the fellows in the world, she belongs to me

8. I felt the joy and I learned about the pain
That my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me
Would surely strike me dead

9. You packed your bags as I recall
And you walked slowly down the hall
You said you had to get away to ease your mind
And all you needed was a just little of time

10. House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight

11. Forget about the past and all your sorrows
The future won't last, it will soon be your tomorrow

12. Well, she knows what I'm about
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy

This should be my wheelhouse. That was the year, during the summer I worked for my dad when he had an electrical supply house business. I worked the warehouse and had the radio on all the time. Songs form that summer always take be back. ....or maybe that was 1972. I don't know. My wheels are rusted and the tires bald.

Mellow as the month of May
Oh, darling, I can't stand it
When you look at me that way

How I get all the women
In the palm of my hand

You've Got To Treat Her Like A Lady - Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose

3. I really want to know you (hallelujah)
Really want to go with you (hallelujah)

My Sweet Lord - George Harrison

4. You swear you've heard it before
As it slowly rambles on
No need in bringing 'em back
'Cause they've never really gone

And she knows I'd love to love her
But she lets me down every time

Check me out, gettin' in all bright and early!

1. Ooh, baby, when I see your face
Mellow as the month of May
Oh, darling, I can't stand it
When you look at me that way

I Feel the Earth Move - Carole King

2. All my friends had to ask me
Something they didn't understand
How I get all the women
In the palm of my hand

Treat Her Like a Lady - Brother Cornelius & Sister Rose

3. I really want to know you (hallelujah)
Really want to go with you (hallelujah)

My Sweet Lord - George Harrison

Was going to make a Chiffons mash up joke, but sticking with the theme...

4. You swear you've heard it before
As it slowly rambles on
No need in bringing 'em back
'Cause they've never really gone

Just An Old Fashioned Love Song - Paul Williams

When Connie Van Dyke passed, I was trying to remember if any of the cast from WW and the Dixie Dance Kings were still alive, which got me to thinking about Burt Reynolds and if Sally Field was the only one left from Smokey and the Bandit, and I think Paul Williams is still with us. After I post this I need to go look that up! Also, I think there might be a parenthetical in there somewhere...

5. She's got something that moves my soul
And she knows I'd love to love her
But she lets me down every time

Temptation Eyes - Grass Roots

I think I've gone on before about my 7 year old self crushing on Rick Coonce...

6. I'm a-tellin' you beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back

Smiling Faces - Undisputed Truth

7. Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by
I say to myself, "You're such a lucky guy"
To have a girl like her is truly a dream come true
Out of all the fellows in the world, she belongs to me

Just My Imagination - Temptations

Hey, this would go well in a matching-ish game with #5 (but I bet it's been done)! Is it just me, or has this been a Temps-heavy LSWE so far?

8. I felt the joy and I learned about the pain
That my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me
Would surely strike me dead

One Toke Over the Line - Brewer & Shipley

9. You packed your bags as I recall
And you walked slowly down the hall
You said you had to get away to ease your mind
And all you needed was a just little of time

Dammit, you bested me, 1971...

10. House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight

Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones

11. Forget about the past and all your sorrows
The future won't last, it will soon be your tomorrow

It Don't Come Easy - RIngo Starr

Possibly my fave solo Ringo, although Back Off Boogaloo is right up there...

12. Well, she knows what I'm about
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy

She's a Lady - Tom Jones

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 1971 (2 year cushion).

Ballad of Dwight Fry - Alice Cooper Group

1971 is still a little early for me to have memories associated with songs to give me a specific year, but I do know my Alice catalog and Love It to Death was the start of my Dennis Dunaway crush (bass player, natch)

Image Bonus: If you remember the 70's, you didn't live through them...

I remember a big to-do over this album cover with people thinking Alice was being obscene when it was just his finger.....oh, the innocent 70s!

Dang it, I was just reading my Denver Post e-dition (SWIDT?) and it's Michael C. Hall's birthday born in, you guessed it, 1971! If I hadn't been all bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning and answered so early I would have seen this beforehand and used Dexter as my IB. Now, it's all up to Hottie....

And, yes, Paul Williams is still alive and kicking at 83 years of age!

I didn't realize that today is his birthday...otherwise I would have spent way more time than I should trying to upload an image that, when I check to see if it went through, did not. Yes, I tried images of both Lizzie Borden and Mary Kay LeTourneau for previous games, but when I checked, got the message that my image expired. Anyway, I will never be able to think of MCH and not think of how Dexter New Blood ended.

Revolution is when you decide that for yourself.

1. Ooh, baby, when I see your face
Mellow as the month of May
Oh, darling, I can't stand it
When you look at me that way
I Feel The Earth Move - Carole King

2. All my friends had to ask me
Something they didn't understand
How I get all the women
In the palm of my hand
Treat Her Like A Lady - Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose

3. I really want to know you (hallelujah)
Really want to go with you (hallelujah)
My Sweet Lord - George Harrison (I love almost all of George Harrison's songs..... except this godawful piece of crap)

4. You swear you've heard it before
As it slowly rambles on
No need in bringing 'em back
'Cause they've never really gone
Just An Old Fashioned Love Song - Three Dog Night

5. She's got something that moves my soul
And she knows I'd love to love her
But she lets me down every time
Temptation Eyes - Grass Roots

6. I'm a-tellin' you beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Smiling Faces SOMETIMES - The Undisputed Truth (Best use of an extraneous word in a song title ever....)

7. Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by
I say to myself, "You're such a lucky guy"
To have a girl like her is truly a dream come true
Out of all the fellows in the world, she belongs to me
Just My Imagination - Temptations

8. I felt the joy and I learned about the pain
That my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me
Would surely strike me dead
One Toke Over The Line - Brewer and Shipley

9. You packed your bags as I recall
And you walked slowly down the hall
You said you had to get away to ease your mind
And all you needed was a just little of time
Nathan Jones - Supremes

10. House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight
Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones

11. Forget about the past and all your sorrows
The future won't last, it will soon be your tomorrow
It Don't Come Easy - Ringo Starr

12. Well, she knows what I'm about
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy
She's a Lady - Tom Jones

I told Bo Donaldson that there would be no Fashion Friday, but I guess he insisted, and so Vandal gets the IBB....

The dong must make an appearance (so to speak) every couple of years.

And I LOVE the Lee Michaels song. Might have something to do with the guy I was dancing with at the Temple Newman Center's kegger ... 8)
