Lyrically Speaking - 2/8/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 08, 2024 3:02 am

The Year in Music Thursdays brings us to my favorite decade of all, the 80's! And how fitting that the year that was randomly selected to be featured is probably my favorite of them all, 1983! I was 8 years old, and this was the year I first really started paying attention to the music on the radio, which at that time was KWK... a classic rock station that still played a lot of regional and lesser known songs, but was beginning the slow morph into the Top 40 station it would be in a few years (by which time, my family had already switched to listening to the area's real Top 40 station, KHTR, ha!) I can still remember where a lot of the songs placed on the former station's 1983 year end countdown, which doesn't come close to representing the true Billboard version unless Jim Capaldi's "Livin' on the Edge" (#15) and Danny Spanos' "Hot Cherie" (#27) somehow just got overlooked...

Anyway..... 1983!!!! Have fun!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Stalked in the forest, too close to hide
I'll be upon you by the moonlight side

2. 9 AM on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
And she's looking real pretty
She's waiting for her clientele

3. Now in the street there is violence
And, and a lots of work to be done
No place to hang out our washing
And, and I can't blame all on the sun

4. Every now and then
I get a little bit nervous
That the best of all the years have gone by

5. No one looked as I walked by
Just an invitation would have been just fine
Said no to him, again and again
First he took my heart, then he ran

6. I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation

7. Circumstance beyond our control, oh-oh
The phone, the TV and the news of the world
Got in the house like a pigeon from hell, oh-oh
Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies

8. She's a real nice girl and she's always there for you
But a nice girl wouldn't tell you what you should do

9. Well, the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind
This far from the borderline
When the hit man comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated

10. It can cut you like a knife, if the gift becomes the fire
On a wire between will and what will be

11. Rise up, gather 'round
Rock this place to the ground
Burn it up let's go for broke
Watch the night go up in smoke

12. This is the end
You made your choice and now my chance is over
I thought I was in
You put me down and say I'm goin' nowhere

Watch the night go up in smoke

Rock of Ages - Def Leppard

Finally back on solid ground! I was hoping your 80s year would be later in the decade so I could krox Pour Some Sugar on Me and tell my story about how we were at the concert where they filmed the video...

12. This is the end
You made your choice and now my chance is over
I thought I was in
You put me down and say I'm goin' nowhere

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 1983 (two year cushion).

Had to go C&W for this specific year. Oh, the memories that Pancho and Lefty album bring back...

Reasons to Quit - Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard

Image Bonus: If you can remember the 80's, you probably didn't live through them....

1. Stalked in the forest, too close to hide
I'll be upon you by the moonlight side
Hungry Like The Wolf (The Orgasm Song) - Duran Duran

2. 9 AM on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
And she's looking real pretty
She's waiting for her clientele
She Works Hard For The Money - Donna Summer

3. Now in the street there is violence
And, and a lots of work to be done
No place to hang out our washing
And, and I can't blame all on the sun
Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant (Eight year old me loved this song, and sang it as "Trick Avenue," because that's what it sounded like he was saying...)

4. Every now and then
I get a little bit nervous
That the best of all the years have gone by
Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler (I'm already dreading this song being dragged out ad nauseum in a couple months....)

5. No one looked as I walked by
Just an invitation would have been just fine
Said no to him, again and again
First he took my heart, then he ran
Stand Back - Stevie Nicks (The only Stevie Nicks song I like, including the ones she sang for FM....)

6. I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
Africa - Toto

7. Circumstance beyond our control, oh-oh
The phone, the TV and the news of the world
Got in the house like a pigeon from hell, oh-oh
Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies
Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders

8. She's a real nice girl and she's always there for you
But a nice girl wouldn't tell you what you should do
Tell Her About It - Billy Joel (It would make sense this was the first BJ song I ever knew....)

9. Well, the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind
This far from the borderline
When the hit man comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated
Twilight Zone - Golden Earring

10. It can cut you like a knife, if the gift becomes the fire
On a wire between will and what will be
Maniac - Michael Sembello

11. Rise up, gather 'round
Rock this place to the ground
Burn it up let's go for broke
Watch the night go up in smoke
Rock of Ages - Def Leppard (#5 on KWK's year end 1983 countdown, paired with Photograph at #2 giving them two Top 5 entries!)

12. This is the end
You made your choice and now my chance is over
I thought I was in
You put me down and say I'm goin' nowhere
Far From Over - Frank Stallone (Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world who likes this song, let alone absolutely love it. One of many underrated 80's songs [Nobody's Fool, On Our Own] spawned from much despised movie sequel soundtracks...)

Image Bonus: If you can remember the 80's, you probably didn't live through them....

It just doesn't get more 80's than Nancy Reagan and Mr. T. I pity the fool who doesn't think melly deserves the IBB...

I woulda made it if I hadn't spent all that time looking for an image. Therefore, it is the Meister's fault I'm late.

It took you that long to find Shatner? He's all over the internet...

I'll add your zero for today onto the zero points you earned for the first 12 games....
