Lyrically Speaking - 2/15/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 15, 2024 5:48 am

The Year in Music enters the 1990's this week, and once again (get used to this), the random number came out low. So we'll be celebrating 1992 today! I was entering my senior year in high school and completely ignoring all of the new music of the day... listening to a "mellow rock" station that had just started broadcasting the year before called The Fox, which gave me my first taste of some of the 70's music that came between the boundaries of the oldies station my parents would listen to and the early 80's when I first stared following pop music. So here's twelve songs I was completely oblivious to at the time...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Well, I never worry, now that is a lie

2. What makes you think you can just walk back into her life
Without a good fight? Oh oh
I just sit back and watch you make a fool of yourself
Cuz you're just wasting your time, oh

3. We won't hesitate
Break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today

4. Girl you know we belong together
I don't have no time for you
To be playing with my heart like this
You'll be mine forever baby
You just wait

5. The sun's still shining in the big blue sky
But it don't mean nothing to me
O-o-oh let the rain come down
Let the wind blow through me

6. Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

7. Or you can tell my lips to tell my fingertips
They won't be reaching out for you no more

8. You like to drive like Mario Andretti
I like it taking my time
But let me say wherever you are going
You know it suits me just fine

9. To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal
If you wanna kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy

10. I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack

11. I hope them cigarettes are gonna make you cough
I hope you hear this song and it pissed you off

12. Lonely sidewalks, silent night
Bring the evening, deep inside
Hold me darling, touch me now
Let the feelings free tonight

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 1992 (two year cushion).

In the early 90s, I was into stuff like Steve Taylor - Bannerman

The whole album "Squint" is wonderful, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squint_(album)
Even the somewhat controversial song "Jesus is for Losers" (controversial for the folks who didn't get past the title and read/listen to the lyrics).
"Just as you are
Just a wretch like me
Jesus is for losers
Grace from the blood of a tree"

The Year in Music enters the 1990's this week, and once again (get used to this), the random number came out low. So we'll be celebrating 1992 today! This is going to be ugly. In 1992, we had an infant son. We weren't listening to ANY current music at all. And I've never caught up....

I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy

1. I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Well, I never worry, now that is a lie

Under the Bridge - RHCP

2. What makes you think you can just walk back into her life
Without a good fight? Oh oh
I just sit back and watch you make a fool of yourself
Cuz you're just wasting your time, oh

My Love You're Never Gonna Get It - En Vogue

3. We won't hesitate
Break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today

Life is a Highway - Tom Cochrane

4. Girl you know we belong together
I don't have no time for you
To be playing with my heart like this
You'll be mine forever baby
You just wait

End of the Road - Boyz II Men

Too bad you didn't go with It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday, because that song still makes me, if not cry, at least tear up....

5. The sun's still shining in the big blue sky
But it don't mean nothing to me
O-o-oh let the rain come down
Let the wind blow through me

6. Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

7. Or you can tell my lips to tell my fingertips
They won't be reaching out for you no more

Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus

This shows how out of touch I was in the early 90s. The first time I heard this song, the video was playing at Maverick's in Cripple Creek while my mom and I were having breakfast and I thought oh, he's kind of hot (in a bohunky way, don't judge me!). I remember it was May of 1994 because I went up the Creek the day before and missed a Rangers playoff game (I know it was 94 because I had the Rangers at 25/1 because they hadn't won the Cup since 1940 but I knew my man Messier would get it done) because I was at a dollar poker machine that just wouldn't quit and came home with several thousand dollars (and no royal flushes so no taxes!). And, of course, my mom figured that if we went up the next day the same thing would happen (I was smart and didn't take it all up with me and just came home several hundred shorter). So, long story longer, the result is that I would have sworn this song was 1994.

8. You like to drive like Mario Andretti
I like it taking my time
But let me say wherever you are going
You know it suits me just fine

9. To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal
If you wanna kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy

Mysterious Ways - INXS or U2

I told you I was out of touch at this time!

10. I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack

Friday I'm in Love - The Cure

Yeah, of course I'd get this one

11. I hope them cigarettes are gonna make you cough
I hope you hear this song and it pissed you off

Little Miss Can't Be Wrong - Spin Doctors

I only know this because it was an early LS favourite, I'm more of the Two Princes girl myself...

12. Lonely sidewalks, silent night
Bring the evening, deep inside
Hold me darling, touch me now
Let the feelings free tonight

Love is on the Way - Saigon Kick

Now this is what I was listening to back then....

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 1992 (two year cushion).

Spend My Life - Slaughter

The only specific year around then that I can remember a concert is 1991 and that's because my sister was about to give birth and couldn't go with me. This was in May and a horrific ice storm hit just as we were driving home. So I know Slaughter was charting in the early 90s...

1. I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Well, I never worry, now that is a lie
Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers

2. What makes you think you can just walk back into her life
Without a good fight? Oh oh
I just sit back and watch you make a fool of yourself

My Lovin' (Never Gonna Use Parentheticals) - En Vogue (And now it's time for a breakdown....)

3. We won't hesitate
Break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today
Life Is A Highway - Tom Cochrane (Or, as BiT pointed out, Rascal Flatts. I might slightly prefer the country version because I definitely don't like the original....)

4. Girl you know we belong together
I don't have no time for you
To be playing with my heart like this
You'll be mine forever baby
You just wait
End of the Road - Boyz II Men (Motownphilly is the only song of their I might possibly recognize any lyrics from...)

5. The sun's still shining in the big blue sky
But it don't mean nothing to me
O-o-oh let the rain come down
Let the wind blow through me
Walking on Broken Glass - Annie Lennox

6. Time can bring you down

Time can break your heart

8. You like to drive like Mario Andretti
I like it taking my time
But let me say wherever you are going
You know it suits me just fine
Good For Me - Amy Grant (I miss the old days of Mecca Radio, which played the hell out of Amy Grant....)

9. To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal
If you wanna kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy
Mysterious Ways - U2 (It's kinda weird that one of the few U2 songs I like came from the 90's, as that was the decade where all good 80's artists went to shit...)

10. I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack
Friday I'm In Love - The Cure

11. I hope them cigarettes are gonna make you cough
I hope you hear this song and it pissed you off

12. Lonely sidewalks, silent night
Bring the evening, deep inside
Hold me darling, touch me now
Let the feelings free tonight
Love Is On The Way - Saigon Kick (I've been in love with this song since another blogger I follow re-introduced me to it five years ago. This is fucking epic...)

Image Bonus: If you can remember the 90's, then you didn't live through them....

Geez, who was the President for most of the 1990's? Bubba and his intern were rock stars, but I'm gonna give the IBB to Vandal who may have found a Bob even more annoying than you-know-who....

Youngster, you don't remember the Clintons' 60 Minutes interview in 1992 when he admitted to causing pain in their marriage and she described herself as not the sort of political wife who bakes cookies and gives teas.

I honestly think you might like it, although given our approximately opposite tastes in music, maybe not....

What makes it funnier is I was actually IN the loop at the time. Not that I saw that interview, but I probably know more about the 1992 election than I do about the last four elections combined....

I'm not sure how it completely escaped me. See my comment above about being in the loop.... the early-mid 90's are my pop culture sweet spot.
