The Soup That Will Draw Me Back to Vegas

Back from a 2-day jaunt in Vegas.

Gambling did not go so well. I like to play (Double Double Bonus) Video Poker and until last night and this morning I could not buy a 4-of-a-kind (which is a big thing in that game.

Monday morning-mid-morningish we went to the 24-hour Oyster Bar at Palace Station. It only has 18 seats and there is almost always a line (for hours). The worker told us that the only real short line time is from maybe 6AM to 10AM-so we had that right.

They are famous for 3 soups-we each had the gumbo which will warrant a return trip at some point.

Then, as we had an early reservation at The Golden Steer steakhouse which is really close to Palace Station, we spent the day there playing Video Poker. That was a mistake. Palace Station is basically a "locals" casino with a lot of Video Poker. I thought it might be all right-But Nope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a surf and turf at Golden Steer and the steak was far better than the lobster.

Tuesday we spent most of the day playing low-stakes BlackJack to stop the bleeding.

We found Ellis Island casino/hotel behind the Flamingo and a couple of blocks off the strip. They had low-stakes blackack and everybody we talked to just loved the place. Great food-reasonable price etc etc. I think we will stay there if we go again.

Tuesday night we hit a few 4 of a kinds in VP so left with a little better taste in our mouths and even hit a quick one at the airport this morning.

I can add Palace Station Oyster Bar with their Gumbo to the 2 other restaurants that will draw back from the far reaches of the continent to a very-simple menu item.

1) The Mahi-Mahi sandwich at the "Ocean Deck" in Daytona Beach. The last time was 2013 so it is getting to be awhilke.

2) The roast beef sandwich at "Maverick's Real Roast Beef" in a northern suburb of the Twin Cities. lucky this one is close (about 160 miles)-we have been known to take a jaunt to the cities for this place alone. However, now that a lot of local bagelries have gone out of business-we can combine a "Bagel Run" with a "Maverick's Run." My preferred breakfast is a blueberry bagel with homemade wild plum or wild grape jelly.

3) And now-the Gumbo at Palace Station Oyster Bar. The weird thing is that the smell of fish permeated large parts of the casino area and, while we have stayed there twice in the past-we have no memory of the smell. This time we stayed at The Flamingo.

Why did you stay so far away? I would have stayed at the Sahara.

When we went in December, we stayed at our favorite, New York New York. We played blackjack there and came out ahead as long as we avoided the tables with continuous shufflers. I also saw Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood.

Yeah, nobody seems to like the automatic shufflers. I suppose it is the future though-as they will gradually make that the only option.

Wife picked Flamingo-choosing places to stay is above my pay grade.

"Strictly Dumpling" (whom I subscribe to on YT and I watch a lot of his videos) has a youtube video on the Palace Station Oyster Bar.

The relevant part is in the first few minutes-especially the part about the gumbo so it is a short watch to see the good parts.
