Who is Harrison Ruffin Tyler?

#1 Post by nitrah55 » Thu May 29, 2008 11:49 am

I had heard about him when I was in college, but had no idea he was still alive.

He has a remarkable relationship to a US President.

Anybody know this without looking?
Spoiler

Suit guy hit it. President John Tyler (b. 1790) had a son at the age of 63, Lyon Tyler (b.1853). His son, Harrison, was born in 1928, when Lyon was 75.

Whatever other distinctions the Tyler family has, being active in the later years is clearly one of them.

Spoiler
John Tyler's grandson
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

On a similar note, I think that there is one surviving Civil War widow left:

Here's a longer article about her from a couple of years ago.
