I was thinking about you, last Friday and Saturday.

There was a dance at each recital called "Irish Festival". The girls wore the prototypical Irish dance outfit for a tap routine in that style.

(There also was an "Italian Festival" dance done in Pointe, teliing the story of an apaprently lass who was a sloppy drunk. )

His two cats have a Pavlovian response to Millionaire. The music tells them its lunch time, so they run to their food dish when they hear it.

Meredith mentions if he gets to a million dollars, he would get a Capital One check with his name spelled properly. This must have been the contestant who followed Sunflower. :)
How hard can it be to spell "Smith" correctly?

At the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, KY, what equipment is on display at the "Train with Ali" exhibit?

A: Hockey Stick
B: Tennis racket
C: Punching bag
D: Golf bag
The Ali Center isn't finished yet, unfortunately, because of problems raising the funds. They've just hired a new director.

Fittingly, which of these bands is not mentioned in Bowling for Soup's hit song "1985"?

A: Duran Duran
B: Wham!
C: Pearl Jam
D: Blondie
Why is the correct answer "fitting"? I'd have had no idea, so time to ATA.

A very nice gesture.

Unlike the English word "email", which refers to a type of electronic message, the French word "émail" literally means what?

A: Energy
B: Enamel
C: Engine
D: Envy

Phones his friend Richard. Richard is not sure but he thinks it's envy. Alan asks how sure and Richard says 20%!

50/50 leaves
A: Energy
B: Enamel

He's still not sure and he promised himself if he got to that level he couldn't gamble with $16,000 so he walks.
I had to take a reading proficiency course in French when I was at the seminary, but I would have had no idea about this one. Since the 50/50 won't help and I've already used ATA, time to PAF. This might be a tough one to Google, however.

And we have another $16K-aire.

I recall the song without remembering that the associated dance step was called the mashed potato.

My "social misfit" card remains in good standing.
I generally consider myself second to none in the "social misfit" category but even I knew this one.

As stated earlier in this thread, Pearl Jam did not form until 1990. Duran Duran and Wham were huge that year, but I always found it curious that Blondie was included in the song since their heyday had long since past (I believe their last top 10 hit was in 1981 and that by 1985 they had very minor hits at best, but I'll have to check this).

This song was written by a guy who went to my high school. He graduated a year after I did in, fittingly, 1985.

Thanks. One of the drawbacks to posting without reading the thread is not benefitting from other people's comments. My gut reaction was that 1985 was too early for Pearl Jam, but since I don't know much about music after 1975 I couldn't be sure enough.

Was he in Bowling for Soup or did he merely write the song?

I just confirmed this. Their last top ten was their #1 hit (and one of my LEAST favorite #1s of the decade), Rapture. By 1985, they were no longer charting and in fact have had only one more Hot 100 hit since, reaching into the 60s with Maria in the mid-90s. Interestingly (to me anyway), Blondie had only four top ten hits, but all of them hit #1.

No. His name is Mitch Allan (although in high school he was Mitch Scherr) and he is in a group called SR-71.

And if you're familiar with the song, there's a line that goes:

Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana

And if you knew that Nirvana and Pearl Jam emerged about the same time (since they're both grunge bands), you could get it that way.

If you pick up on the intended meaning "fitting", the process of elimination on the other bands works, though, if you're somewhat MAWGish.

OTOH, his $16K check might be made out to Allen Smith. :P

And on the gripping hand, Meredith should know that there really is no such thing as a $1 million Capital One check. Just a string of annuity checks...

I must say that Alan was incredibly polite. How many times did he say "thank you" while sitting in the Hot Seat.

"Yes, that is the right answer to the $100 question."

"Thank you!"

And so forth for every single question.

There is an Alan Smith who works at my store on days.

Ghost would love him. He's been the daytime cart pusher since the place opened in 1992.....

I agreed with you on this when I used it in LS. 1985 is a song that really bugs me with its use of catch-all 80's cliches.....
