I don't know how it originated, but hip-hop didn't play a role. It was used in central Wyoming, not exactly the hipster capital of the world, when I was a kid (around 1866. You know, when one of the lanterns was burned out on the Wells Fargo stagecoach.)

I wasn't aware that this was a widespread "game". In Oklahoma growing up, teenaged couples got kisses when spotting such cars - and two if it was a rear taillight.

I think you hit it in your first sentence. I've found that teachers sometimes begin a language semester by discussing some anecdotes or history of the lands of the language before diving right in.
