Hello, I'm new here! Just auditioned in Sacramento-question:

#1 Post by secondchance » Tue Jun 24, 2008 7:32 pm

Hi all, just found this site last week and want to say thanks for all the good advice I've found here while trolling around looking for info before my first-ever audition.

So, I took the movie and regular test yesterday in Sacramento, actually in Jackson, CA - a casino-resort in a small gold-country town an hour east of Sacramento. To my amazement, I passed both tests! Even tho I made them laugh with my "loud and funny" reaction to my number being called, unfortunately (it seems), I was not chosen to receive a second interview after the reeealllly quick interview. I am a normal looking suburban soccer mom type, so it's not like i scared them off or anything - lol.

Would anyone here suggest that I drive to Vegas tonite to re-audition tomorrow morning, hoping to get that 2nd audition? In other words, i wonder who here got the "happy card" without actually receiving that 2nd meeting? I know it's kinda late in the day, but I just woke up after a really long couple of days traveling while nursing a cold.

BTW, the process was exactly as described by KillerTomato in his response to "Road Trip Auditions" posting last week. There were about 400 folks in line for my group - the earliest group. I got there at 5:30am for the 7am start, and I was around number 140-something. After being called to interview after filling out the questionaire (we were given a few hours), we were then "shooed away," so I cannot really tell how many were chosen to stay for the 2nd interview.

I'd say about 20 of us passed both tests. After that, i was in such shock that I really lost track of how many were called after that. Probably a bit more for the regular test, and a bit less for the movie-only.

So, whatcha think? Does it make sense to audition again? Thanks!

Congratulations on passing. Were people called for a second interview? I don't think it would be worth it to go to Las Vegas but it's your call. Others may weigh in with better advice. I auditioned in Vegas three years ago but after you passed the test there was one face to face interview.

There are others who will probably have more and/or better advice. But my two cents would be not to go to Vegas. This will be the same group of people conducting the interviews, they will probably remember you (or will remember your name). So one of a few things can happen. You might not pass the test again, which might hurt your otherwise good chances. You might pass the test and wow the producers, which would be great. Or you might pass the test and irritate them that you didn't just wait to see what would happen.

I am not an expert and I have no idea how they truly feel about this type of thing. But if it were me, I would wait until I got word one way or the other before auditioning again.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck in your quest for the hot seat!! :)

FTR, my post with the details was pure speculation; I haven't been to a road audition for a couple of years! :-)

I hope you won't take this the wrong way (which probably means I shouldn't respond at all), but what exactly would you do differently in Vegas that you didn't do in Sacto? While I'm unaware of anyone getting a happy card without a second interview, I do know of people who have had the second interview who STILL didn't get a happy card. Note that this is purely anecdotal; I suppose it's possible that a second interview isn't necessary to get a happy postcard, we just don't know.

But to answer your question, I think it only makes sense to make the trip to Vegas if you really think you'll be different enough in the first interview to make it to a second. The only person who can answer that is you; you have to weigh the expense, time, trouble and so forth against the possibility that, even if you do make a good impression, it still may not be enough. How much will you be upset if you do go to Vegas, and maybe even get a second interview, but still don't get a happy card?

What it comes down to is that they interview (first and/or second) hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people each year, and use about 200 or so on the show. I guess if the drive isn't too bad, and you can afford the gas (!), and you think you'll do better, and you think that you really have a shot, then go for it. But realize that the quest for the hotseat is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't beat yourself up one way or the other.

Hi! Thanks for responding - Yes, I found out later that there were some called for the 2nd interview. So, I'm not quite sure what to do. I've heard different theories on why they choose who they do to tape it...

I think the tomato fellow has given good advice. I would not go again so soon. I realise that they you would have to wait a year or fly to New York but I think it is too soon. Just my two Lincolns.

hmmm, what i would do different...

#7 Post by secondchance » Tue Jun 24, 2008 8:12 pm

It's hard to say, Killer, since the interview was soooooo rushed, but i would maybe try to be a little more interesting on "what I do for fun" and "what I would do with the money..." I had good stuff to say, but she switched the questions so quickly, i'm afraid i sounded somewhat like a boring mop... my advice, come up with something really unique about yourself, and mention it immediately, cuz they don't give you time for more than a sentence. I know the main contestent coordinator did remember me from my "response" when my number was called, cuz she teased me about it later, so i hope that's a good sign.

My experience is that they're looking for you to have one or two good stories. You don't have to have good answers to every question. There was one question, I can't remember which one now, but I was just like yeah, I have nothing. And it didn't hurt me, I just shifted to another topic. So I wouldn't worry too much about having non-spectacular answers, it sounds like you made yourself stand out in spite of that. You never know a) what they're looking for, and b) what they've already found.

I see your points. Yes, you could use this second audition to your advantage provided you pass the test. If you don't pass it won't matter other than being out gas money and a hotel room and whatever you lose in the casino. If you do pass and get a second interview and they recognise you then you just tell them that you had more to say and you didn't get a chance in Jackson. Make this second chance work in your favor.

Lotsa good advice and insight -- decisions, decisions........

So, would i be upset if i pass the test, get the 2nd interview, and then not get the happy card? Not any more than if I didn't get it anyway. At least that way i'd know i gave my all. again, i need to weigh if i would strike them as an irritating stalker or as pleasantly memorable. BTW -- at least i picked up $535 at blackjack and roulette !! (watch, I'll lose it all in Vegas).

again - decisions, decisions... well, i'm gonna finish dinner, do a load of laundry, and either slide into the Jetta in time to pull up for the line, or slide back into bed. hee hee. thanks for the quick input. I like you guys.

Hopefully, if you do decide to go, you'll still have time to see this:

If you go again, and you pass again (I don't doubt you'll pass!), just remember in the interview that it's not WHAT you say, it's HOW you say it!

As my dear friend Phyllis told me once, "Be yourself, only BIGGER!"...this is the best advice I've ever gotten w/r/t game show auditioning, and it did pay off for me when I got called to be on J! a couple of years ago.

Yes, you need to have something interesting to say, but saying it in a not-so-excited way means you'll never have a shot at the second interview.

If you do go, break a leg! If not, save those roulette winnings for a trip to NYC once they start taping, and try again then!

Glad to help! I'm sure you'll deduce how to delete parts of the other post that you don't want to include in the box.

Don't go.

You haven't even been rejected yet.

If you do get the sad card, then think about going to another audition.

If you decide to go to another one. Prepare, prepare and then prepare some more.

Not quite concluded--you're still on mailbox stakeout! (For whatever their "the second interview doesn't mean anything" promise is worth.)

Welcome to the Bored, Second Chance!

Have you ever gone to an audition before? Did you play the Phone Game, back in the day?

Welcome, Second Chance! Stick around, tell us what happens with the postcard situation, and -- as appropriate -- we'll do our best to offer advice (both wanted and unwanted) for your time in the hot seat or your next audition.

Welcome Second Chance and good luck!!!

Your "jammies" thing leads me to confess something that happened to me yesterday. (golf day)

Margaret bought me some new "shorts" that I wore yesterday. Here are some of the comments I got:

Kusch, you forgot to take off your jammies!!!

Kusch, does Margaret know you dress like that?

Kusch, a gramma called the pro shop, she wants her kitchen curtains back.

Kusch, how long do you have to wear those to win the bet?

Kusch, those match your legs----ugly.

Maybe I not ought to wear those again, at least golfing.

Bulldunky - how'd you score?

If you scored well, wear them all the time.

If not, don't.

It has not been a good year Pea, flat awful. I did birdee 2 of the last 3 holes to shoot 81. Most scores this year have been right around the 80 mark, best so far is 75. No high 80's but like I said mostly around 80.

I kinda like the shorts.

The state senior tournament is in Bismarck starting the end of July, I will have my game ready.
