But AFAIK, TruCarMa was the only person we know on the show this season.

...it was definitely Leszek's voice. I didn't know he did a PAF this season, or how he's connected to that contestant. He certainly cut it close with his answer, just barely getting in most of his guess before the 30 seconds expired. It's not clear whether he Googled or not, but today's Google results for caffre cat seem pretty helpful.

Until the PAF call near the end of the show, I thought today's episode was most notable for saying that the umbilicus is located in the stomach. Huh? Maybe so, if you're talking to a two-year-old with a very limited vocabulary.

My PAFing was hampered by the fact that while Lyn said "cat", I heard "tax", and Googling "caffre tax" isn't terribly helpful. Finally chose the answer I did based on a guess as to the etymology of the word, i.e. what country did it sound like it would have come from. Luckily, that was the right choice.

7 for 7 as a PAF; not too shabby . Just wish I could get into the dang Hot Seat someday.

Leszek, congratulations on coming through again! It was especially impressive if you were trying to find a "caffre tax," which is heretofore unknown on the internet.

I found this item on the web, which could explain why your episode was chosen for today, but probably not:

Traditionally, Halloween is the day for black cats, but in a way the Caffre cat may be a more appropriate-looking feline for the occasion... its markings can make it appear a bit spooky or menacing. Which is perhaps why so many people are looking up the Caffre cat on the Internet today.

Maybe it's the Halloween-like coloring: the cat has coloring that is light brown or orange-brown, with dark stripes. Kind of like a jack-o-lantern in a big, furry ball.

The Caffre cat is better known as the Egyptian wildcat or African wildcat, and it was possibly the first cat to be domesticated. Wildcats are the direct ancestors of the house cat, making the Caffre cat the Mother of All House Cats.

A reasonable guess in the past, but turns out that modern domesticated cats are descended from the Near Eastern Wildcat, not the African Wildcat:

The site you pointed to is for a Bengal cat breader who is using the name Caffre Cattery, probably to sound more exotic. Bengals are not Caffre or Kaffir cats.

Bengals are a new breed of cat that was developed in 1983. They were created by crossing a domestic cat with an Asian Leopard Cat. Bengals are intelligent, friendly, and quirky cats that enjoy playing in running water and don't mind getting wet. They also play fetch and "talk" to their owners.

Our vet thinks that Jasper is Bengal. Jasper has spots like a leopard and his belly is very light with spots on it as well. The more desirable trait for this cat breed is rosettes or marbling rather than spots, but spots are acceptable in "pet grade" cats. Jasper doesn't have rosettes or marbling. Jasper does like to take showers, turn on faucets and play fetch. He will also stick his head under the faucet, when I am doing dishes, to get a drink of water. He also has a lot to say, particularly in the morning, when he hasn't been fed.

Wow. Artie the Psycho Cat resembles Jasper a lot. The belly thing really strikes me. If she were splayed out you could see her lighter tummy.I don't know about the water business, but I'm wondering if there would be some Bengal back there somewhere? Would her lack of tail matter?

Jasper is not a lap cat, but he likes to be petted and he needs to be in the same room as people.

Jasper looks like he has the same eyeball shape and expression as Artie. I find it quite enchanting. It's like they're trying to flirt with you, only lazily, like a cat does.
