Wal-mart branches out

#1 Post by a1mamacat » Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:47 am

Apologies if this news has already been posted

Wal-Mart announced that sometime in 2008, it will begin offering customers a new discount item: Wal-Mart's own brand of wine.

The world's largest retail chain is rumored to be teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable
price - in the $2 to $5 range.

Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of the Wal-Mart brand into their shopping carts but, 'There is a market for inexpensive
wine.' said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at University of Arkansas, Bentonville. 'However, branding will be very important.'

Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for the Wal-Mart wine brand.

The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:

10. Chateau Traileur Parc
9. White Trashfindel
8. Big Red Gulp
7. World Championship Riesling
6. NASCARbernet
5. Chef Boyardeaux
4. Peanut Noir
3. I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar
2. Grape Expectations
1. Nasti Spumante

The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either white meat (Possum) or red meat(Squirrel).

Dear Ms. A!mamacat,

We at the NSAS wish to formally protest your suggestion that Squirrels are proper for human consumption. Our dear friends of the forest deserve more respect than that. And we've never found a suitable recipe.

That is so unlike Wal-Mart, considering that everything from their stores come from China.

Ha, ha, ha!

You know, you should stick to the legal stuff and leave the comedy to me. People might think you really, uh, eat squirrels or something......
Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

--squirrelmama (10/3/07)

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

3. I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar
Too funny. I've had hundred dollar wine and five dollar wine and it all tasted like vinegar. Of course, I can't stand the taste of beer either!

:P I'd vote for Chef Boyardeaux!

Couple of weeks ago Final Jeopardy had a "chefs" category -- the person was known as the "King of Chefs & Chef of Kings...."

Of course, the only "French Chef" I could think of was Julia Child -- wrong gender as well as wrong age!

I probably would have WAG'd Who Is Boiardi? He was a real person, and although not the Chef of Kings, he did cater Woodrow Wilson's wedding!

My TWoP discussion of subject

Red Neck and White Trash are what I'd use.

White Trash wine already exists! I saw it for the first time in the store a few months ago. I'm kind of a wine snob and my boyfriend thought I was being sarcastic when I said "want to get some white trash chardonnay?", thinking I was insulting cheap wine, but that was really the name!

For the sake of consistency, Wal Mart (hyphen gone?) should stick with the "Great Value" name. Great Value White, Great Value Red etc.

Trader Joes has some decent wines bottled by Charles Shaw Wine. They are affectionately known as "Two Buck Chuck."

It's even won a few awards:
At the 28th Annual International Eastern Wine Competition, Shaw's 2002 Shiraz received the double gold medal, besting the roughly 2,300 other wines in the competition.

Shaw's 2005 California chardonnay was judged Best Chardonnay from California at the Commercial Wine Competition of the 2007 California Exposition and State Fair. The chardonnay received 98 points, a double gold, with accolades of Best of California and Best of Class.
