I think she does that to emphasize what knowledge they are asking so contestants, under the pressure and lights, do not react "I've never heard of this guy so I'm gonna jump this question." and then react like I knew that the Dead Sea was the lowest place on earth but I never heard of the guy.

Yes, if you really don't know the answer that is what the lifelines are for. I guess this fellow knew American geography really well, and all the talk about Death Valley, and did not think that it might not be the lowest place on Earth.
