3 and 2 is correct.

Your athlons are in the right place.

By contrast, the equally arbitrary set of numbers generated to measure chess players puts club players around 1500-1800, national masters 2200, and world champions IIRC about 2600 2700.

(arbitrary, but with a statistically generated set of rules for gain and loss of points with each tournament game result).

I always thought my oldest son, a hurdler, would have made a good decathlete. They don't compete in decathlon in university meets in the U.S., though.

so how do you get to be a decathlete????

Is there a non-U set of games??

I apologize profusely. I hit the wrong button and "edit"ed Etaoin's post instead of "quote"ing it. The following is how my response should have read:

You compete in college at the events you do the best, and you hope to have parental support or some kind of developmental sponsorship after college so you can work on the rest. The USOC provides encouragement and training camps to those athletes that show great promise.

Many decathletes go to international meets to get experience.

I have returned Etaoin's post to its original state.

Uh Oh!

Is this an editing scandal?

Yes, but unlike a certain well-coifed former presidential candidate, I'm not denying anything.
