Colorado Congressman Ken Buck unexpectedly announced his retirement. That reduces the House Republican majority to 218-213.

Good luck with that. The Nassau County GOP and the state GOP disavowed that fraud a long time ago.

According to published reports in the last two weeks, he will not run for re-election, although he previously filed. Six other Democrats have already filed for Menendez's seat, including Representative Andy Kim and Tammy Murphy, the governor's wife. Qualifying ends March 25 and the primary is June 4.

And Menendez’s support among primary voters has cratered.

Note the contrast. Contrary to the lies told on this Bored, Democratic voters have abandoned a politician who has been persuasively charged with wrongdoing, without waiting for a conviction. At least one Republican on this Bored lies by claiming Democrats haven’t abandoned him fast enough. In contrast, Republican voters, including the aforementioned liar, continue to support a presumptive presidential nominee who has been persuasively charged with serious wrongdoing, and whose policy positions are demonstrably for sale. Many will continue to do so even after a conviction.

Note Donny’s abrupt reversal with respect to Bud Light mere hours after Anheuser Busch executives announced a $10,000-a-plate fundraiser for him, and his abrupt reversal on Tik Tok in the hope of attracting financial support from one of its billionaire investors.

That’s bribery, pure and simple. Does anyone expect the House Oversight Committee to investigate it? —Bob

Persuasive only to those with TDS. To rational people, it's obvious that these charges are purely political. And, of course, you bring Trump into this discussion, as your obsession compels you to do.

Ditto Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher. That makes it 217-213.

Sen. Menendez is also considering running as an independent. They have an inflated sense of their own popularity.

New York has very tough laws about qualifying to run as an independent, so it's unclear whether Santos can qualify. But if he does, the district, which is already in play, becomes a likely Democratic pickup.

One interesting sidelight about the Gallagher resignation. Under Wisconsin law, the special election for the remainder of his term will be held in November, along with the regular election. So the Republicans will remain a person down for the next eight months.

More bad news for Republicans on the local level in special elections. In Alabama, a Democrat flipped a seat in the State House that was in somewhat of a swing district near Huntsville. The Democratic candidate, Marilyn Lands, lost in 2022 52-45. But after the Republican incumbent resigned after being convicted of voter fraud (funny how it's always Republicans who actually get convicted of voter fraud), she ran again and won on Tuesday 62-37. Some of this margin may have been buyer's remorse the same as with George Santos, but she made abortion and reproductive rights the centerpiece of her campaign. This is the first special election in the country since the Alabama Supreme Court decision declaring an embryo a human being.
