However, as you rightly point out, multiplying civilian casualties only helps Hamas, so it is in Israel's best interests to minimize such casualties as much as possible.

That's why I am highly suspicious of this rocket attack today that destroyed the hospital. The timing of the explosion was perfect as far as Hamas is concerned. It pretty much scuttled President Biden's upcoming trip to the region (he now won't be meeting with any Arab leaders) and got a new wave of sympathy for Hamas with anti-Israel demonstrations starting very very soon after the explosion. The only way Hamas can win this war with Israel is if the world puts enough pressure on Israel to agree to some sort of ceasefire that essentially locks in what Hamas gained by its savage attack. That's how Hamas has survived to fight again another day in the past.

I don't think this was a Hamas-affiliate rocket that somehow misfired. I think they deliberately targeted their own hospital to turn the tide of public opinion in their favor.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't put it above Hamas to do it deliberately as it fits their modus operandi but going back to the possibility (probability?) that it was a misfire-earlier in the week, it had been widely reported up to 25% of Hamas rockets fired from Gaza misfire (if that is the correct term) and land in Gaza itself.

From what I had seen, they use pretty primitive launching eqipment-old water pipes and so forth-so that would not be a surprise.
