Oregon fights back

Oregon, unlike most states, has a supermajority quorum requirement for its Legislature. That means that a minority of legislators can bring business to a halt by simply not showing up for work. Republican legislators in Oregon have been using that requirement for years to block passage of bills favored by a majority of Oregon citizens and by a majority of the legislators they have elected. As a side effect, these boycotts have paralyzed the Oregon Legislature for weeks at a time.

The citizens of Oregon fought back. They passed a constitutional amendment that disqualifies from running for re-election any legislator with 10 or more unexcused absences in a session. The Oregon Secretary of State applied that provision to block 10 incumbent Republican senators from running for re-election. The Oregon Supreme Court has just affirmed her decision.

Let's see how many Republican legislators are willing to put their careers on the line to continue blocking bills supported by a majority of the people of Oregon. That's the true test of whether they really are standing on principle or whether (as I strongly suspect) they're just playing politics. --Bob
