Susan Grimbalas
New York, NY
Stay-at-home mom

Susan has brought her whole family with her. Her husband, George, her 8 1/2 year old son, George, and her mom, Susan, are in the audience.

Susan had a job, but took time off to raise George, Jr. When Susan got the call from Millionaire to say she's be on the show, she was walking George, Jr. home from school. They jumped up and down on the sidewalk and hugged each other to celebrate. If she wins no money here, that moment alone was worth the whole experience.

George, Jr.'s advice to his mom is, "Good luck!" Meredith knows that he's also said that if Susan believes in herself, she'll do well.

$8K-easy for me.

$16K-it's time to use a lifeline. Maybe the audience read this story. I thought it was "gasoline" since that seemed to be big news in my part of the world.
I'm just a game show nerd.

No problem on either of these. Wasn't there an earlier question about what SMS stood for, or what it meant?
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Not sure about an earlier question, but it's "Short Message Service".

Whatever happened to the "no kids in the audience" rule? My two younger sons had to stand offstage rather than be in seats where they could be on camera as elwing and my two older sons were - and my two younger sons were 16 and 15.

If that's what you thought, Susan, why did you waste the lifeline?

It helps to know what SMS means. But since I don't do texting I had no idea it was a subject for senatorial scrutiny.

I wish I could find out what her strategy was that led to this guess.

I think they still enforce the rule for general audience members, but they've quietly relaxed it for contestants' family. And I applaud TPTB for this rare instance of doing the right thing.

It's all his fault. That'll be $10.

Hmmm...I think I hear someone switching costumes in the background...
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.

I think, under the pressure of The Damned Clock, she failed to translate the question properly. I would suspect that this was a fairly obscure headline, so the question wasn't about remembering that all at; it was really "What is SMS?" If she didn't notice that, she probably went with the answer that had the most publicity about rising prices last year.

But it is a shame that she left three lifelines on the table.

Estonut, I seem to remember an earlier question about what SMS was and the answer I believe was text messaging.

That's what I remember, too. There's never an archivist around when you need one.

Astute observation. I took a different tactic on this question. If it was gas, the headline wouuld have said "gas prices". Pretty much the same for food and college tuition. Hence, it had to be text messaging (verified by the thought that "m" likely was "message").

8K: I would do the same as her and ask the audience.

16K: Luckily, I know what SMS means and knew this one. So I'd be going for $25K with my PAF and ATE intact.
