NPR had a story on this a few months ago, probably about the time the movie premiered. Piaf's life was tragic.

Dan uses ATA

Dan said he thought he had the answer figured out, but he used the ATA "to be sure". He really could have used that ATA on Edith Piaf question (as I would have had to do), which would have left him with two lifelines to tackle the $25K level.

Or, of course, he could have taken that 50/50 gamble at $16K for the chance at $25K with the opportunity to continue and with the STQ.
