The Boneys Part Three The Songs #40-#1

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sat Mar 05, 2011 6:03 pm

Into the Top 40 we go..

#40) Purple Sky-Kid Rock
I have never been a fan. Lately he has reinvented himself into a 3rd-rate Bob
Seger. But there ARE a couple of tunes on his latest that elevate him to 2nd-rate
Seger. This one in particular could even slide in with the tracks on "Stranger in
Town", or even more appropriately, John Cougar Mellencamp's "Scarecrow". OK, Kid,
I'll give ya this one. It's a nice piece of Midwestern rock & roll.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BC ... 3&sr=301-1

#39) Hurts Like Hell-American Bang
This is rock & roll the way guys my age used to like it back in the day (and
still do when the air guitar urges strike). This would not be out of place with
my old Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, and Nazareth albums. I betcha Wayne & Garth
would love these guys.

http://www.amazon.com/Hurts-Like-Hell/d ... 87&sr=1-17

#38) Celebrity Status-Marianas Trench
Cool pop-rock. A pounding drum bed in the verses lead into a hooky chorus. Nice
guitar riff in the bridge, too.

http://www.amazon.com/Masterpiece-Theat ... 906&sr=1-1
(track 9)

#37) Little Star-Shplang
Despite the weird band name, this is a very gentle and pretty melodic midtempo
ballad. It was featured on a compilation album, International Pop Overthrow Vol.
13.

Unfortunately, I can't find a soundbite.

#36) Acts of Man-Midlake
This harkens back to the late 60's/early 70's British Folk stylings of bands like
Pentangle and Fairport Convention, although most of their songs tend to lean more
to the more somber side of those artists' works. This is a pretty yet morose
haunting of a song with mournful flutes and vocals that is eerie yet at the same
time lovely.

http://www.amazon.com/Acts-Of-Man/dp/B0 ... 886&sr=1-2

#35) Going the Right Way-The Iveys
Not to be confused with the band that started out with this name and were
rechristened by Paul McCartney as Badfinger, this is a Texas trio of siblings
who recall Fleetwood Mac fronted by a singer who is a Rob Thomas (Matchbox Twenty)
soundalike. Pretty pop.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039P ... mu_dp_trk3

#34) Second Best-Courtney Murphy
More shimmering 70's-styled pop from the big Australian.

http://www.amazon.com/Second-Best/dp/B0 ... 436&sr=1-5

#33) Far From Home-Doobie Brothers
From the Tom Johnston-led days of "Listen to the Music" and "China Grove" to the
Michael McDonald era then back to Johnston, one constant has been Mr. Patrick
Simmons. He's been the unsung Offensive Line allowing quarterbacks Johnston and
McDonald to make the big plays. His biggest hit as lead vocalist with the Doobs
was "Black Water", and that wasn't even supposed to be a single. It was a B-side
until some DJ somewhere flipped it over and started a groundswell of attention.
Here Pat takes the lead on a pretty accoustic number. If you liked "South City
Midnight Lady", you'll want to check this out.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043J ... 2&sr=301-2

#32) What's the Drawback?-Silver Seas
Loved this band's last cd. Their latest isn't too bad, either. My favorite track
on it is this 70's throwback that has more than a passing resemblance to ELO's
"Evil Woman". In fact, the song namechecks ELO, so it's intentional.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003QW ... 1&sr=301-1

#31) Creep Along Moses-Mavis Staples
Jeff Tweedy of Wilco's collaboration with the Gospel/R & B legend produced a
nice cd. This track is my favorite of the lot. At 71, Ms. Staples proves that
she still has enough gas in the tank to school the so-called singers of this era.

#30) Change of Time-Josh Ritter
I think this will polarize most listeners. It's a pretty song that starts off
softly and builds in intensity, adding instruments and voices as it goes along.
I love it, but some may be put off by the thrashing guitars that come in and the
repetitive chorus. I love its drama.

http://www.amazon.com/Change-Of-Time/dp ... 187&sr=1-1

#29) Mercury Mine-Gavin Guss
Catchy, spaced-out pop tune. The soundbite leaves out the best part, unfortunately.

http://www.amazon.com/Mercury-Mine/dp/B ... 273&sr=1-2

#28) Never Gonna Leave This Bed-Maroon 5
Currently being overplayed on VH-1's "Jump Start". I may avoid the show for awhile
so that I don't get sick of the song. Time to spend more time with "Mike & Mike
in the Morning" on ESPN-2, I guess. This is a nifty piece of easygoing power pop.

http://www.amazon.com/Never-Gonna-Leave ... 516&sr=1-8

#27) Kick-Ass-Mika vs. Red One
This song played over the closing credits of the movie of the same name, about
a young non-super powered super hero. Would I like the song as much if I didn't
see the movie? dunno. But I did and I do. Mika gained a bit of attention with his
"Grace Kelly" song a couple years back, and this puts his glammy vocals over a techno beat. I don't
normally care for that genre, but this one works for me.

http://www.amazon.com/Kick-Ass-Redone-T ... 819&sr=1-2

#26) Don't Leave Don't Go-Elvyn
60-ish midtempo power pop number. Very British Invasion flavored.

http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Leave-Go/dp/ ... 962&sr=1-2

#25) So Bad-Malibooz
Howabout a two-fer. This is another British Invasion styled goodie, right down
to the "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah"s. In fact, guest stars on the album include Chad &
Jeremy, Tony Hicks of The Hollies, Spencer Davis, and members of other 60's bands
like The Troggs and the Ventures. Does the lead voice sound familiar? Maybe
because it belongs to Walter "Magnet & Steel" Egan. Fab!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003AM ... 3&sr=301-1

#24) Misery-Maroon 5
Third and final entry on our list by Adam Levine & company.. Just a well-crafted funky pop single. 'Nuff
said.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043C ... 753&sr=1-1

#23) Marry You-Bruno Mars
Just a happy, happy song. Hard not to smile when listening to this one. Fell for
it even more after seeing it performed on "Glee"..a really joyful upbeat scene
it was.

http://www.amazon.com/Marry-You/dp/B004 ... 058&sr=1-1

#22) Hey You Fool-Dino
This is another nice bouncy bit of pop, with a sugary falsetto chorus that grabs
you.

http://www.amazon.com/Hey-You-Fool/dp/B ... 271&sr=1-1

#21) Factory-Band of Horses
Lush and sweeping, string-laden ballad with a touch of alterna-country flavor.

#20) Grenade-Bruno Mars
Driving soul-pop with a bit of Michael Jackson in its DNA. Another rare crossover
from the best-selling pop charts to the Boneys list.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043Z ... mu_dp_trk1

#19) Modern Man-Arcade Fire
This is the band that took the Grammy for Album of the Year. I wasn't quite as
impressed as the Grammy voters, finding that it was a hard album to warm up to.
Outside of a handful of tunes, I just didn't get what the critics were feeling.
THIS song, though, interests me. A nice guitar and bass groove over shifting time
signatures makes this a standout track for me.

http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Man/dp/B00 ... 738&sr=1-7

#18) Closer-Jason Castro
Hmmmm. The fourth place finisher from Season 7's American Idol
finishes higher on my list than the second place finisher (#44) and the winner
(#79) from last season. That's because neither of last year's top dogs had
anything on their discs to compare to this happy-go-lucky cool breeze of a song.

http://www.amazon.com/Closer/dp/B003EVJ ... 00&sr=1-38

#17) So Caroline-The Posies

Fast-paced but easygoing pop-rocker that has echoes of Beatles and Beach Boys.
I have come to the realization that I am a sucker for a falsetto-laden chorus.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043J ... 9&sr=301-1

#16) When I Still Have Thee-Teenage Fanclub
Like The Posies, Teenage Fanclub is another band that's worshipped as forefathers
in the modern Power Pop genre. This track is a very pretty song with Byrdsian
harmonies (unfortunately the soundbite doesn't get to the point where it kicks
into the 4-part harmonies) that shimmer and hit that sweet spot in the connection
between the ears and the brain.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PK ... mu_dp_trk8

#15) Long Goodbye-The Nadas
Along with falsetto choruses, I also appear to have a soft spot for cellos.
This song has BOTH. How can I resist? The freakin' soundbite ends before the
hooky chorus gets a chance to kick in. Bastiges!

http://www.amazon.com/Long-Goodbye/dp/B ... 004&sr=1-1

#14) X-Gavin Guss
"X as in you use to be mine", the lyrics say. That's the premise of this witty,
nicely arranged pop number. Good harmonies, too.

http://www.amazon.com/X/dp/B002ZQ5C9G/r ... 207&sr=1-1

#13) Forget You-Cee-Lo
Most of you know this. Most of you who know this, know this as "F@$# You". I'm
going with the cleaned-up version. I don't consider myself prudish, but it bugs
me some wondering how many people will buy that song they heard on the radio,
"Forget You"..maybe even they're buying it for their kid or grandkid, getting it
home, and finding it's got lyrics a liiiitttle diferent than they expected. I
dunno, just my opinion. Strange, I listened to George Carlin's "Seven Words" when
I was 13, but I guess your priorities change when you're a grandfather. Bottom
line is this is a great song that is still great without the shock value of the
F-bomb. The lyrics are funny as hell without it. Oh well.

http://www.amazon.com/Forget-You/dp/B00 ... 765&sr=1-2

#12) The Weary Kind-Ryan Bingham
This is the Academy Award winning song from the movie "Crazy Heart". It is an
absolute perfect fit for the film, capturing the worn-down essence of Jeff
Bridges' character. Heartbreaking.

http://www.amazon.com/Weary-Kind-Theme- ... 946&sr=1-1

#11) Little Lion Man-Mumford & Sons
Here's where I risk being called a hypocrite. The F-Bomb is dropped in this song,
right smack dab in the middle of the chorus. Why am I not offended by THAT? First
of all, this is not a song that Top 40 radio (more like top 20 these days, but I'd better
not get started on that) is gonna play, and even if it did, kids would not be
turned on by this song. Secondly, this is a far cry from the lightness of
"Forget/F@$# You". It's a heavy-hitting dramatic powerhouse of a song. I read
where its composer said he was afraid of his mother's reaction to the F-Bombs,
but she told him it was alright, as there was no other word that would fit the
emotion that needed to come across. So there you go. Bottom line, this is an
awesome piece of work. The soundbite contains the magic word, so beware..

http://www.amazon.com/Little-Lion-Man/d ... 520&sr=1-1

The Top Ten is next. Where's Casey Kasem when you need him? Methinks I'll get myself a new Merryman for next year's countdown..

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE Closer!!!!!!!! That's my favorite of his stuff and it should have been released as a single!

I hear he's gone to Christian music, so I'm unlikely to hear anything new from him for a while...

Here they are: My ten favorite songs of last year.

#10) Between the Lines-Stone Temple Pilots
A big ol' sloppy, thrashing guitars, slumped over the microphone, had one shot
too many stomper. Makes me feel 18 again. Makes me wish this had come out in my
bar band days 'cuz I guarantee we'd have covered it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003N7 ... 7&sr=301-2

#9) Older-Band of Horses
My favorite track off their "Infinite Arms" album. Sounds like what might have
happened if "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" had been recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash
& Young instead of The Byrds.

http://www.amazon.com/Older/dp/B003PX0Q ... 74&sr=1-40

#8) The High Road-Broken Bells
This came out almost exactly a year ago (March 9, 2010), but even then I knew it
would land high on the Boneys rankings. A collaboration between James Mercer of
The Shins and producer Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), this is a ghostly,
groove-in-the pocket workout framed by a opening electronic hook that sounds like
a touchtone phone being used.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003E8 ... mu_dp_trk1

#7) Salvation Jane-Courtney Murphy
The best of a fine collection of songs by Murphy, this has a chorus so infectious
it makes my EARS smile. This guy deserves to be known outside his native Australia
SO much.

Go here and then click on "Launch mp3 player". The first song that comes up is
"Salvation Jane" in its entirety.

http://www.courtneymurphy.com.au/home

#6) Crossfire-Brandon Flowers
Ah, here comes another falsetto driven chorus. This effort from The Killers'
frontman delivers a grand, sweeping gem that won't leave your memory.

Here's a link to a video on his website. You have to sit through a short commercial,
but it's worth it to hear the whole song. The Amazon soundbite sucks.

http://www.brandonflowersmusic.com/vide ... _crossfire

#5) A Man With Nothing To Do-Justin Currie
The former Del Amitri frontman knows how to craft a song. This is a beautiful pop
song, with a melody that hits the target over and over. So good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_NBeuVC ... 776D17FDC8

#4) Secrets-One Republic
Absolutely gorgeous. And there are those cellos again!

http://www.amazon.com/Secrets/dp/B002WP ... 534&sr=1-1

#3) The World Wants To Dance With Me-Skeleton Staff
Is it possible to fall in love with a song? If so, I'm head over heels with this
one. It recalls the batch of British New Wave bands in the 80's who dressed
stylish and sang with an air of suave sophistication. This band, however, resides
in present-day Australia. Check out the lyrics. It's about the wave of euphoria
you feel when first falling in love ("She simply smiles and the world wants to
dance with me"). The singer is so carried away that even the laundry list of
unsavory types he describes seem like folks he would have no problem cutting a
rug with. Add some key changes and a majestic mini-choral backing, and this one
is carried into pop heaven. You can hear the whole track at this link (Track 12
in the list about a third of the way down the page). The song is VERY quiet until
you get to about 28 seconds in.

http://skeletonstaff.bandcamp.com/

#2) Just the Way You Are-Bruno Mars

I toyed with the idea of the Skeleton Staff song and this one tying at #2, such
has been my flip-flopping on ranking the two, but that woud be a copout, so Bruno
gets #2, even though I'll probably change my mind as soon as I post this. Still,
this is a song that I do believe will stand the test of time and be remembered
many years down the road, as its appeal is timeless. It's Pop Songcrafting 101.
So damn pretty, and the chorus soars.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043Z ... dm_dp_trk2

#1) The Cave-Mumford & Sons
No hesistation ranking this here. Once I hear this one, there is nothing that
could follow this act. A quiet beginning builds into a raging storm of
instrumentation..the closest you'll ever get to hearing a banjo used as a heavy
metal instrument. Horns blast underneath and I can't believe that no accoustic
guitar strings were harmed during the making of this record. A truly powerful,
astounding piece of work. Not for everybody, but if it works for you, everything
else you've heard in the last year pales in comparison.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Cave/dp/B0038 ... 122&sr=1-1

There you have it. Thanks to all who got through all of this. I look forward to
(hopefully) hearing what YOU'VE liked lately, if you're so inclined.

Add Breakeven by The Script if you haven't heard it a kajillion times and don't like it. It's an earworm that I like.

I also loved The High Road when I heard it last summer--when we rent cars in AZ they have Sirius and I get an earful of the alternative stuff, but then they keep repeating the same stuff all the time and I try to listen to local stuff anyway to get a feel for the area, but the kids knew to hush when the Broken Bells came on because no way was I switching even if they had heard it 6 times already that day.

It was on the 2009 list. #3, I think. It's the only song of theirs that I have liked, but I liked it a lot.

Funny yes, but the pottymouth really brings out the true sentiment of the song that the cleaned up version just doesn't capture. The shame is that the song has to be censored to get airplay in the first place.....

I think the original is funny because of the disconnect between the light tone and the harsh words, but it does bother me when it pops up in the video queue of suggestions when I'm playing stuff for Erin. It just showed up on the top when I was playing Grenade and I had to close the window and find something else for her.

Re: The Boneys Part Three The Songs #40-#1

Very nice list, T-Bone! I just wish I was more familiar with most of the songs! I haven't done my ranking for 2010 yet, but all three of the Mumford and Sons songs will definitely be on it. Little Lion Man has a very good chance of coming out on top. I will also have F&*& you up there (but in it's original, nasty form!).

Here are a few songs that will probably make my list for the year. If you don't know them, I would suggest giving them a listen. If you do know them and think they suck, that's probably because my taste generally sucks! :) Apologies for duplicates that are also on your list that I may have missed.

Dead American Writers - Tired Pony
Light You Up - Shawn Mullins. I was never a fan of his earlier stuff, but this one got to me.
Clementine - Sarah Jaffe
Beg, Steal or Borrow - Ray LaMontagne. Another candidate for the year's top spot.
For The Summer - Ray LaMontagne
Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You) - Old 97s
Cameras - Matt and Kim
I Just Had Sex - the dudes from SNL (with Akon). I don't think I have laughed so hard at a song in a long, long time
Need You Now - Lady Antebellum. Not a huge country fan, and this one was way overplayed, but still really like it.
Stop For A Minute - Keane
Do You Love Me - Guster
Beauty In The World - Macy Gray
Tiny Light - Grace Potter and The Nocturnals. This will be in the top 5.
That's Some Dream - Good Old War
Lay Me Down - Dirty Heads
Down By The Water - Decemberists
Wheels - Jamie Cullum
Tighten Up - Black Keys
On My Way Back Home - Band of Horses
Laredo - Band of Horses. I know you had some BoH songs on your list, but I don't remember which ones. Do you know No One's Gonna Love You by them? It is one of my favorite songs of the last five years.
I And Love And You - Avett Brothers
New Morning - Alpha Rev
Rolling In The Deep - Adele

Did the single come out before the album?

Yes. I bought the single on I-Tunes on January 3 of this year, but it had been out for at least several weeks before that.

Lots to check out here, Fishie. I shall do so, since we do share some similar tastes. Black Keys just missed my lists. On My Way Back Home made my Top 80, Laredo came close. Need You Now was a Top 5 finisher on the 2009 list. I hadn't even realized that the Old 97's had a new one out. Likewise Keane. I definitely have to check that out. Adele I just picked up, likely to contend for 2011 honors. Avett Brothers are also from 2009. Unfortunately I didn't discover them until their Grammys spot. The Decemberists also is an early 2011 release.

I bet I will like more than one or two of these!
