Pacino Meets Paterno

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:46 am

Al Pacino will play Joe Paterno in a new biography entitled Happy Valley, to be directed by Brian De Palma. This could be an interesting film, since Pacino bears a good resemblance to Paterno and had one of his better recent roles as a football coach in Any Given Sunday. Plus, he's worked well with De Palma before in Scarface and Carlito's Way. No word on any other casting yet, although I'm kind of curious as to who's going to play Jerry Sandusky. Pacino's career could use a little boost now since his most recent effort was romancing Adam Sandler in drag.

One thing I'd be willing to bet on. You won't hear anyone in this movie utter the famous line "Say hello to my little friend."

Four years later, it's still on, now with Barry Levinson at the helm.
Al Pacino will portray Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in an upcoming HBO biopic.

The film, directed by Barry Levinson, focuses on the sexual assault scandal that rocked the university and tarnished Paterno's legacy.

According to Variety, the film's synopsis states, "After becoming the winningest coach in college football history, Joe Paterno is embroiled in Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure on behalf of the victims."

Pacino has been attached to a Paterno film since 2012, when the project was titled Happy Valley with Brian De Palma in line to helm. The film was ultimately put on hold until HBO revived the project with a reworked script and Pacino still in the lead, Deadline reports. Paterno died in January 2012.

Richard Dreyfus and Robert DeNiro have successfully played Bernie Madoff, but Sandusky is a more revolting role.
