Gee, thanks Obama, Pelosi, and Reid

#1 Post by danielh41 » Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:07 am

We just saw that our health insurance premium is going up by $120 per month. Vision is no longer included in that like it had been, so we'll have to pay extra for a vision plan. And our co-pay for specialists is going up 25%. Gotta love that "Affordable" Care Act. Thanks Barry, Nancy, and Harry. You had to pass it so that we could find out what is in it...

Nobody expected Obamacare to cure everything wrong with the U.S. health insurance system. I still hope that many previously uninsured patients get insurance and preventive care, instead of waiting until problems get serious and going to the E.R.

Have you looked around for a better plan? You may want a plan with a higher out of pocket max and lower premiums or you might want to look into a health savings plan that can be used for expenses but uses tax free dollars and unlike flexible spending can be rolled over annually. I don't want to delve into finances but there are subsidies up to 4 times poverty level.

Do you have no other choice of insurance companies? If you do, shop around.

Remember insurance companies are limited in their profits. You might wind up getting a refund like they did in New York.

Also remember that medical costs are high because so many people can not or do not pay their bills. Having insurance will now pay at least part of that, thus lowering the bills for the rest of us.

and also artificially high because the write off is at the full amount, for tax purposes, and the emergency is the only place where they can't be turned away regardless of money and it is also the least cost effective care place

I'll bet you have to use Mecca's optical department.

I'll bet you're wrong.... NTTAWW Mecca's optical center. I got my one and only pair of glasses there 5 years ago, and they were perfect for seeing at ballgames until my Dad lost them in Kansas City back in May...

Has Mecca cut some employee's hours so they can't get medical insurance? I hope not.

Mecca has been cutting hours for years, long before anyone knew what Obamacare was. People don't seem to realize that the full time job at the lower levels of the service industry was already on its deathbed long before all this talk of the new insurance laws came about....

For the first time in several years, my premium at Aetna is going down. It was never that much, I think $80-something a month, but now it will be $66 a month. Maybe the deductible is going up but it will all work out.

You have hit on a somewhat valid point. The biggest problem with Obamacare is the fact that there's no constraints on costs. Insurance companies actually have no reason to hardball doctors any more on negotiated costs since they are capped at 15/20% of premiums. If they force doctors to take less money, they make less money. So premiums will continue to go up, although if you qualify for subsidies, Uncle Sam will foot a part of the bill. And there's a good chance that what's covered now is somewhat more extensive than what was covered before.

However, you neglected one factor in your evaluation. If you or a family member got really sick this year, try to guess what your next year's premium would have been under the old system. That is if your insurer even bothered to offer you a policy next year.

So I haven't paid much attention to all of the Affordable Health Care stuff because there wasn't anything I could do to affect it, so I figured I'd just wait until the dust settled and see what was what.

I went to the site a week or so ago to read up and checked out the calculator and, for the first time in a very long time, I will now be able to afford health insurance.

Thanks Barry, Nancy and Harry!

This is excellent news. I have heard from others that they will be able to afford it themselves now, too.

I also wanted to wait to see how it would play out before passing judgment. I'm glad we did.

I won't be able to get health insurance until Jan. 1 due to supposed preexisting conditions. Even better, I will be paying almost the same for all three of us as I am for just Linda and Josie today for the same coverage.

I was going back to look at some old LSWE games for inspiration (and just because I love to look at old stuff), and when I hit your reply on one of the games, a very famous synthesizer riff from the 80's began going through my head, and I didn't even realize why until I noticed you had changed your signature! I must have noticed it subconsciously before I actually became aware of it....
