Bridge report

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Fri Nov 24, 2017 7:37 pm

I’m at the San Diego Nationals, and the start isn’t good. I’m playing with a pick-up partner and between the miscommunications and outright mistakes, we started the national Life Master Pairs with a 43% game. It’s possible that a good evening session will get us through to the second day, but that’s not the way to bet. —Bob

A second below-average game has us out of the event. I’ll be playing a regional side game tomorrow, assuming I can find a partner. —Bob

Finally got on the board with a 54% afternoon session, good for 1.40 red points. We did not add to that total with our 45% second session.

Tomorrow, the Open Board-a-Match team event. I’ll be interested to find out who my partner and teammates will be. —Bob

Two really bad sessions have me out of the national Board-A-Match Teams, so it’s another regional pair game with yet another pick-up partner. Fortunately, I have my regular partner booked for the balance of the tournament, starting Tuesday. —Bob

A couple of decent sessions got us 9th overall in the regional pairs game, 6th in X and 1st in Y, good for 12.41 gold points and a cumulative total of 13.81 points.

I’ll be playing the rest of the tournament with my regular partner so I’m hoping for more consistent results. Next up, the first day of the Blue Ribbon Pairs. Let’s hope it’s not also my last day in the event. —Bob

We had a poor first session followed by a very nice second session. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite nice enough and we missed qualifying by a smidgen. The second session was worth 2.40 platinum points, bringing my total for the tournament to 16.21 points.

Most likely partner and I will spend the next two days playing regional pairs, though it’s possible we’ll get recruited to play a two-day knockout teams event. —Bob

Kind of the opposite of Tuesday’s game. We played a Swiss instead of pairs. We had a very good first session but failed to back it up. We still finished 12th overall, good for 5.68 gold points and a tournament total so far of 21.89 points.

Partner and I will play regional pairs today before Friday starts our last national event, the Keohane North American Swiss Teams. —Bob

Another mediocre pair of sets. Both partner and I were a little short of sleep and it showed. Still, our two mildly above-average sessions were good enough for 22nd overall. That adds 3.09 gold points to my haul from the tournament, for a cumulative total of 24.98 points.

Today will be my last opportunity at this tournament to pick up platinum points. We’re playing the Keohane North American Swiss Teams. Goal number one: reach the second day for the first time in my career. —Bob

No joy. We had four wins and a tie out of eight matches, but all of the wins were small and one of the losses was huge, so we’re out of the event. The wins were good for 2.39 platinum points, which will be my last platinum points of the tournament. Cumulative total to date: 27.37 points.

Another regional pairs game today. —Bob

Partner needs new glasses. He’s having trouble seeing the cards accurately, which is, of course, affecting his game. We had a couple of section scratches that put us in the low overalls for the event, for a total of 2.77 points, mostly gold with a bit of red. Cumulative total for the tournament is now 30.14 points.

The tournament concludes tomorrow. We’ll probably be playing fast pairs unless we get an attractive offer to play Swiss teams. —Bob

A score correction in this game reduced our master points to 2.66, for a cumulative total of 30.03. --Bob

We finished the tournament by playing the Fast Pairs. We had a couple of meh sessions, which combined were good enough for 18th overall and a final 2.95 gold points, and a final tournament total of 32.98 points. Marching on toward 600 points for the year. --Bob
