Despite a valiant three-run ninth inning rally, the New York Mets fell a bit short in their comeback bid against Washington last night, falling by a 25-4 score.

As one might expect, games like this have the stat fans out in droves and here's what they found:

--Washington's 19-0 lead after five innings was the highest in modern (since 1900) major league history.

--The 25 runs were a franchise best (as were the 26 hits and the 21-run margin) and the most in the majors since 2007, when Texas beat Baltimore 30-3.

--The six runs Washington scored in the eighth came off Mets infielder Jose Reyes, who gave up two home runs in that span.

--It was the worst loss in Mets history (and considering the early years, that says something).

--Washington became the tenth team in major league history to score 25 or more runs in a home game (with only eight at-bats).

At least, the Mets are still newsworthy.

More fallout today from the Mets/Nationals game last night. One of the players involved lost his job, but, surprisingly, it wasn't one of the Mets.

Washington relief pitcher Shawn Kelly, who pitched the ninth inning and gave up three runs, was designated for assignment (essentially, cut) for throwing his glove to the ground after one of the Mets players hit a home run. Kelly was upset that the umpires were making him slow down as he tried to get the game over with and reacted badly to the home run. The team's GM said it was disrespectful to everyone involved and gave Kelly the heave ho.

If he would have only choked Bryce Harper instead, he'd have never been cut...

Apparently there were rumblings in the press yesterday about discontent on the Nationals about the new manager's bullpen management. I don't know whether Kelly had that in mind (or even knew about the comments) or whether his timing was just bad, but the concern I read about was that Kelly was showing up the manager. --Bob

I wonder how many fans arrived late and/or left early, not quite witnessing history.
