Sportsball 6-29-18

#1 Post by elwoodblues » Fri Jun 29, 2018 2:07 pm

We have come to the end of this edition of Sportsball, and today we will play the old phone game. I will do my best Fred impression and give you these five groups of things to put in order for three points each.

Thank you all for playing.

1. Put these FBS college football teams in geographical order, starting in the north and going south.
1) Golden Gophers
2) Ragin’ Cajuns
3) Razorbacks
4) Cyclones

2. Put these famous Joes in the order of their birth, starting with the earliest.
1) Joe Montana
2) Joe Louis
3) Joe Namath
4) Shoeless Joe Jackson

3. Put these teams in the order in which Nolan Ryan played for them, starting with the earliest.
1) Houston Astros
2) New York Mets
3) California Angels
4) Texas Rangers

4. Put these expansion teams in the order in which they began play, starting with the most recent.

1) Jacksonville Jaguars
2) Dallas Mavericks
3) Vegas Golden Knights
4) San Diego Padres

5. Put these rule changes in the order they went into effect, starting with the earliest

1) American League designated hitter
2) NFL two-point conversion
3) NBA three-point line
4) NHL shootout

Bonus: This one is a little different. There are two questions, and you may answer one or the other but NOT BOTH. If you give answers to both, the try for point is no good. The first is fairly easy and is worth one point, and the other is a little harder and is worth two points. So you can either Kick The Point or Go For Two.

Kick The Point: In what conference are the Cyclones from Question 1?

Go For Two: What Hall of Famer was Nolan Ryan's 5000th career strikeout victim?

Kick The Point: In what conference are the Cyclones from Question 1?

The Leveled Chicken Shack Conference

Go For Two: What Hall of Famer was Nolan Ryan's 5000th career strikeout victim?

Joe The Popcorn Guy. The pitch was thrown so hard, it struck out the batter (whose identity, as I imagine you have surmised by now, is unknown to me), careened off the catcher's mitt, and struck Joe as he was making change for a customer and not paying attention to the action on the field, putting a hole clean through him. Joe was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Vendor's Hall of Fame (hey, you didn't specify WHICH Hall of Fame......)

Thanks for some fun games, elwood! I'm glad they all weren't as hard as this one. I lucked into a few previous answers because they happened in L.A./Orange County.

In addition to seeing the "last" tour by The Who about 15 times, I saw both the "last drags" at Orange County International Raceway and Nolan Ryan's "last" game pitched at Angel Stadium two years in a row.

4) NHL shootout

1. American League designated hitter (1973), 3. NBA three-point line (1979), 2. NFL two-point conversion (1994), 4. NHL shootout (2005)

I will Go For Two & I will say that the answer is Rickey Henderson.

Elwood, while I didn't play the game for points, I really enjoyed reading along with your game. I learned a lot, too. I can't believe I'd almost forgotten "Fred" and his put these things in order torture.

Yeah, I did forget sometimes he says starting with the most recent rather than earliest.

I had fun, too. Thanks Elwood.

Thank you all for playing.

1. Put these FBS college football teams in geographical order, starting in the north and going south.
1) Golden Gophers
2) Ragin’ Cajuns
3) Razorbacks
4) Cyclones

1-4-3-2 (BTW, A Non E. Muss, the Ragin' Cajuns are Louisiana-Lafayette, not LA Tech.)

2. Put these famous Joes in the order of their birth, starting with the earliest.
1) Joe Montana
2) Joe Louis
3) Joe Namath
4) Shoeless Joe Jackson

4-2-3-1
Using Joe Frazier instead of Joe Louis would have made it tougher because he and Namath were only a year apart. But your Sportsball Meister is stern but fair.

3. Put these teams in the order in which Nolan Ryan played for them, starting with the earliest.
1) Houston Astros
2) New York Mets
3) California Angels
4) Texas Rangers

2-3-1-4
Ryan played for all four 1961-62 expansion franchises, and only for those four teams, in his long career.

4. Put these expansion teams in the order in which they began play, starting with the most recent.

1) Jacksonville Jaguars
2) Dallas Mavericks
3) Vegas Golden Knights
4) San Diego Padres

3-1-2-4
"Most recent," said Fred.

5. Put these rule changes in the order they went into effect, starting with the earliest

1) American League designated hitter
2) NFL two-point conversion
3) NBA three-point line
4) NHL shootout

1-3-2-4

Kick The Point: In what conference are the Cyclones from Question 1?

Big 12 (Iowa State)

Go For Two: What Hall of Famer was Nolan Ryan's 5000th career strikeout victim?

Rickey Henderson

Gotta love the Bored. I learn stuff from the answer page besides the correct answers. I hadn't heard the tidbit mentioned above. I was 2 when they expanded, so the Angels were always here for me. I didn't know who their expansion "classmates" were.

Thanks, elwoodblues!

Thanks, elwoodblues!

Darryl Strawberry had a similar career with the four teams currently or formerly in New York...
