Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Late 1980s, Part III

Compendium: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=55782

As promised before, you're getting fifteen songs today to make up for my absence from two weeks ago. This section of the countdown is slightly depressing, as it features a lot of "final top ten hits".

#65. I Want Her, Keith Sweat (1988)

First song from the "new jack swing" genre to show up in my countdown.

#64. Got My Mind Set on You, George Harrison (1987)

This cover version of the 1962 James Ray song has become a Bored favorite, thanks to the video of a squirrel playing a pipe like a saxophone. It would be George's last #1 hit and last top ten solo hit.

#63. One, Bee Gees (1989)

Their final U.S. top ten hit, which served as a tribute to their late brother, Andy.

#62. One Heartbeat, Smokey Robinson (1987)

#61. Just to See Her, Smokey Robinson (1987)

It's the one-two punch from Smokey Robinson! Both this and the previous song would be Smokey's two final U.S. top ten hits.

#60. What Have I Done to Deserve This, Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield (1988)

You guessed it... final U.S. top ten hit for both Dusty and the Pet Shop Boys.

#59. Crossfire, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble (1989)

The biggest hit for the blues legend, as it was his only song to hit #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart.

#58. People Get Ready, Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart (1985)

The classic 1965 hit by the Impressions got a revival (pun intended) twenty years later by this pair of British rock gods.

#57. The Valley Road, Bruce Hornsby & the Range (1988)

#56. Jealous Guy, John Lennon (1985)

John wrote this song in 1968 and recorded it in 1971, but it wasn't released as a single until five years after his death. Surprisingly, this is John's only solo song to make my Top 500... but, with this song, all four of the Beatles have found their way onto my countdown as solo artists.

#55. Funky Cold Medina, Tone-Lōc (1989)

#54. Secret Separation, the Fixx (1986)

You probably didn't know they had a song aside from "One Thing Leads to Another". These guys were certainly not one-hit wonders, as this was one of six Top 40 singles they had in America. It peaked at #19 on the Hot 100 and topped the Mainstream Rock chart.

#53. Be Near Me, ABC (1985)

#52. You Got It, Roy Orbison (1989)

Sadly, Roy never got to see this song become a top ten hit, as he suddenly died of a heart attack at only 52 years old just days after he performed this song in Antwerp.

#51. Back in the High Life Again, Steve Winwood (1986)

One of four hit singles from Steve's Grammy-winning 1986 album. James Taylor provided some backing vocals.

We'll go into the top fifty of this half of the 1980s next Friday.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

Smokey isn't dead! Smokey could have a hit tomorrow! He probably won't, the current music world being what it is, but he *could*.
