Fire up the toaster!

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Sun Aug 19, 2018 8:27 pm

Baltimore has lost 87 games so the Orioles cannot win more than 75 games this season. Boston has won 88 games so Baltimore cannot win the American League Eastern Division. The Yankees have won 78 games so the Orioles will finish behind at least one non-division winner in that division.

Houston has won 75 games and Oakland has won 74 games. The Astros and the As have 3 games remaining against each other so at least one of those two teams will win at least 76 games. Seattle has won 71 games and the Mariners have 6 games remaining against the Astros, so at least one of those two teams will win at least 76 games. Seattle also has 7 games remaining against Oakland, so at least one of the Mariners and the As will win at least 76 games. This means that at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division will also finish ahead of the Orioles.

I don't think Baltimore has been this bad since they played their home games in St. Louis. The Orioles have been toastified. --Bob

Kansas City suffered its 90th loss of the season today so the Royals cannot win more than 72 games. Cleveland has won 73 games so Kansas City cannot win the American League Central Division. Boston and the Yankees each have won at least 79 games so Kansas City will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Eastern Division. Houston and Oakland each have won at least 76 games to the Royals also will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division.

Consider this season a Royal flush. Kansas City has been toastified. --Bob

San Diego has lost 85 games so the Padres cannot win more than 77 games. Colorado has won 75 games, Arizona has won 74 games, and the Rockies and the Diamondbacks have 7 games remaining against each other, so at least one of those two teams will win 78 games this season. The Padres will finish behind at least one of the Rockies and the Diamondbacks and therefore cannot win the National League Western Division.

The Cubs and the Brewers both have won at least 78 games, so San Diego will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Central Division. St. Louis has won 76 games, Los Angeles has won 75 games, and the Cardinals and Dodgers have 4 games remaining against each other. Therefore, at least one of those two teams will win at least 78 games. Therefore, either San Diego will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the National League Central Division or the Padres will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division.

San Diego's prayers went unanswered this year. The Padres have been toastified. --Bob

Like I said last month, Cincinnati is still technically in the hunt for a WC spot in the weak NL, but their toastification is pretty much inevitable. (Miami will likely get there first, though.)
