I loved Dave Montgomery. So did Boonie.

Always had a smile and nice word for me during my Philadelphia Phillis days.

When I came back to Philly for a visit in 1987, he told me that everyone in the Phillies front office watched my Tic Tac Dough run and how proud he was of me. Over the years, I'd see him at various events and always a big hug and a few minutes to chat.

Boonie knew him from the neighborhood baseball leagues when the world was young. Dave was one of the older kids but the kind of guy that everyone liked because he liked and respected everyone.

That carried through to his tenure with the Phillies, where he worked his way up from ticket seller to top guy.

When Harry Kalas died, he stood at the gate and greeted almost every person who entered.

My heart hurts so much.

Whole town showed up
Gymnasium filled
Floor was wet
From all the tears spilled
And the preacher man said
We're all gathered today
And I'll never forget
What he had to say

[Chorus]
It's always too soon
It's always too fast
There'll never come a day
That you don't want 'em back
It ain't about the numbers
Chiseled in concrete
It's how they lived their lives
In the dash between
In the dash between
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
