Since I assume this isn't an idle comment on Frank's part, it might mean that this connection has something to do with plays, or movies that have been based on plays (or later made into plays). Three names stand out immediately. Omar Sharif's best known role besides Lawrence of Arabia was Funny Girl, which was based on the Broadway musical of the same name (his role was played by Sydney Chaplin who got a Tony nomination). And Gregory Peck's signature role was in To Kill a Mockingbird, for which Jeff Daniels just got a Tony nomination. Daniels lost out to Bryan Cranston who was in Network, and Ned Beatty was in the original film of Network (one of his best known roles and the one from the quote).

I don't see any connection between actors in the puzzle though.

There are all sorts of actors/Broadway people here … I am wondering what the connection might be.

One name that strikes me is Richard Castellano. He only had one other significant role besides The Godfather and that was Lovers and Other Strangers (for which he got an Oscar nomination). That was based on a play that was a flop on Broadway. The movie version produced the Best Song winner that year For All We Know.

I think this movie is the reason Castellano is on the list, but I'm not sure what connection it has with anyone else.

I don't think my 'hint' helped. It was a reference to something specific one of the presenters said, and was not intended to lead you in the direction of the theatre in general.

I'm pretty sure the actress is JENNIFER ANISTON, but I have not heard that she has retired.
If not Anniston, how about CAMERON DIAZ?

It can't be Jennifer Aniston - she was just on the red carpet promoting a movie she made with Adam Sandler (thank you, fashion bloggers Tom & Lorenzo).

Quit watching fashion blogs and start binging on those Tony presenters. We need to get this solved.

I didn't think this was going to be this difficult.

I don't know if this is useful enough to qualify as a hint, but I would like to state that there is virtually not a single movie actor I could not have worked into this puzzle. Some would have confused the issue, and some would have mired us in pretty obscure matches, but anybody who has ever made a movie could have been in this puzzle.

I originally thought it had to do with the actor's name being part of the title of another movie:

Glenn Close = Close Encounters
Kevin Bacon = Canadian Bacon
Richard Castellano = Cast a Giant Shadow (with Kirk Douglas)
John Barrymore = Barry Lyndon
Janet Gaynor = The Gay Divorcee
Shirley Booth = The Man in the Glass Booth
William Hurt = The Hurt Locker

Not sure if that produces enough clues or matches

I just got back from 2 weeks in Hawaii, so needless to say, I have not thought much about this puzzle, nor did I see the Tonys. I wonder if Frank's comments about just about any movie actor being able to be added to this puzzle makes me wonder about some kind of "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" thing. I know Kevin Bacon is already in the puzzle, but very little else is jumping out at me, other than what's already been noted.

Here are some clarifications I was able to confirm:

20. is definitely CAMERON DIAZ.

62., the way the question is written, is definitely ANTHONY DAWSON.

64. is JESSICA LANGE.

104. must be SHIRLEY JONES. Jennifer Holliday has never been close to winning an Oscar; the guesser might have been thinking of Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for playing the Holliday role in the movie version of Dreamgirls. But Hudson has not had a #1 Billboard song. Diana Ross and Bette Midler have had #1s and been NOMINATED for Oscars, but didn't win. The way the question is written definitely seems to me to be pointing to Shirley Jones.

108. can't be Danny Thomas, unless he had another eponymous show that I'm not familiar with. Make Room for Daddy, which morphed into the Danny Thomas show, aired all its episodes in the 1950s. Andy Griffith's show ran from 1960-68. Mayberry RFD lasted until 1970, but Andy was no longer a regular on the show.

On 12.: I was the one who suggested Leslie Caron, simply because I couldn't think of any other musicals from 1951 with beautiful women in them. I neglected Show Boat, probably because I was thinking it was earlier. Ava Gardner's close-up in that show is certainly more famous than any shot of Caron's. I can't find literal confirmation, but I believe Gardner is the correct answer here.

ANTHONY DAWSON
Yup, I misworded this. I should have said the first actor whose FACE was seen on screen. Sorry.

Two of the answers with question marks on the latest consolidation are wrong.

I think I have the two wrong question marks.

90. She took a five year hiatus from acting in order to head a beleaguered government agency.

MYRNA LOY?

Even when I thought of it, I didn't think Myrna's UN involvement fit the clue.

I am thinking it's more like JANE ALEXANDER, head of the National Endowment for the Arts. NEA is certainly beleaguered.

95. “You've ruined my life! You've ruined my furniture, you've ruined my clothes! My family likes you more than they like me! Why? All you do is drool and shed and eat!”

TOM HANKS?

It's not Turner and Hooch. It's Beethoven and CHARLES GRODIN.

Everything on this consolidation is correct, or includes the correct answer.

30. is FRED ASTAIRE

80. is MAUREEN STAPLETON

81. is ROBIN WILLIAMS

Looked them up to confirm.

FRED ASTAIRE? CARY GRANT?
This is FRED ASTAIRE. If the Tangredi is matching people's names with a movie another actor has appeared in, Fred would go with Janet Gaynor for The Gay Divorcee. Similarly, Robert Young would go with Peter Boyle for Young Frankenstein. But Frank is usually a stickler in first word title puzzles for not omitting "A" or "The" if that's the case, then The Gay Divorcee wouldn't work unless its's a name matched with any word in the title and that seems like too wide a net. I also can't get a match for Glenn Close, since there's no one from Close Encounters here.

What kind of hint can I give you to get this started again?

Frank:

I haven't given up on this, and every couple of days I go back to the names to see if something strikes me, but I can't come up with anything other than the ideas I've had before, which seem to me to be playing a bit too fast and loose with your usual Tangredi rules or lead to far too many alternate matches or both.

The fact that actors are used in two different capacities indicates this puzzle isn't something like two actors in the same movie or same role, but rather that something about Actor A leads to a movie in which Actor B appeared. Since you say that "There is virtually not a single movie actor I could not have worked into this puzzle," I'm thinking that there's something about an actor's name that links to a movie title. But I can't get any farther. The few titles I derive from names seem like random noise.

Ditto. There aren't any movie names jumping out at me -- and no, I haven't had the chance to review the Tony broadcast yet.

I keep coming back to this: "but anybody who has ever made a movie could have been in this puzzle."

I also keep looking at the character actors to see if something rings a bell on a match.

I've seen so many of these actors lately - doing lots of movie watching - and nothing rings a bell.

There is one particular circumstance in which someone could act in a movie and not be in this puzzle, but I can't think of any examples offhand. And I tried to avoid referencing any movies that were too obscure.

Unlike some puzzles, solving this one does require some movie knowledge. But the Tangredi is quite simple once you see it.

I wonder if this Tangredi has something to do with film directors. Almost every film has a director, and I can imagine one of the Tony presenters giving a shoutout to directors. Plus, knowing who directed a movie and what other films that person may have directed is somewhat in depth film knowledge. But it can't be Actor A in a film that has the same director as some film in which Actor B appears because that would be way too wide. I thought about Actor A in a film directed by Actor B, but I don't see nearly enough actors who directed movies for that to work. And you couldn't make that work for a lot of actors with rather limited filmographies.
