FNGD Q5 - Friday July 18 - No MORE THEME
Q5 - STARS OF AN ERA
A slight shift is in the works. No more Hamiltons.
B - This fighter was said to pick his opponents from the "Bum-Of-Th-Month-CLub",and (given that the idea of :"entourage" was decades away from being hip), to be surrounded by "a bunch of bums".
G - WW II Airmen probably werent thinking "bums" when they nicknamed their inflatable life rafts after this sexy comedienne-singer.

I'll guess Rocky Marciano.
This I know from reading books again. I later read one of the WWII books that proliferated during the 50s called The Raft. The guy talked about his Mae West.

SC's doubly correct response gives the G team the victory!

4 points for both halves of the question.
Silver is quite a girl. Like Paul Smon said.
The quotation about bunch of bums for the entourage of a fighter, especially Mr. Louis comes from those wiseacre NY sportswriter types AFAIK.
Mr. G. F Handel wrote an oratorio called Judas Maccabeus which unlike Messiah did not simply crib from the Bible for lyrics. The lyricist came up with one well-renowned couplet at the end, in a chorus, to a nice hummable theme:
" See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes
Sound the Trumpets, Beat the Drums.
maybe previous sources, I dont know
The wiseacre version
See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes
Surrounded by a bunch of bums
And that is that for this week. Thanks to all for playing.
