a Saga

50 years ago, a baby girl arrived. She was healthy and happy, but was not to be raised by the woman who gave birth to her. Her young mother was 18, unwed and unable to provide for the new life, so she and the young father wisely and lovingly asked that a family be found for their baby.

6 weeks later, a young couple with a small son, wept with joy to hear that their prayers had been answered, and that a daughter would be joining them. They could have no other children. They cleaned a spare room, called friends and family for equipment, clothing and furniture, and prepared to welcome her.

The big day arrived, and the family set off to claim their daughter. Her new big brother, all of 3 ½, walked into the waiting room, looked at the baby and said “Okay, that’s my sister. Let’s go home now”.

Skip ahead 18 years, and the little girl is (she believes) grown and preparing to move out on her own. Harsh words were exchanged, as the parents knew she was not ready. The fateful words every adoptive parent dreads were uttered “what do you care, you’re not my real parents.”

It took many years, and many life lessons, but the girl realized the truth of her parent’s worry, and they reconciled. They have seen her through two failed marriages, financial disaster, parenting nightmares and all with love, support faith and caring. They have not rescued her from everything, but rather given her the respect of supporting her while she rescued herself.

On this, my 50th birthday, I say THANK YOU, to my parents. I say THANK YOU to the young couple that ensured that I found a family to love me and be loved. I say THANK YOU for the joy and angst of my son, who has shown me just how difficult it can be to love unconditionally.

Thanks all for the lovely thoughts.

Can't say enough how great it is to be able to have a place to let things out that sometimes can't be done in real time.

Thanks for the cakes. I just got rid of 10 of the cruise pounds, so I'll have to pass :roll:
