BITD Cardinal Question for LB

#1 Post by fantine33 » Mon May 19, 2008 6:50 pm

This was probably before you were born, but I'm sure you know Cardinals stats from when Pepper Martin was in diapers. So, here goes...

I was thinking about my disinterest in sports and was trying to remember a game in St. Louis in 1979 where I was a day late and a dollar short. I could have sworn it was when Lou Brock got the stolen base record, but I see that was in 1977. So what would warrant a big flashing scoreboard and an "I was there" certificate? If I could find the certificate, I'd have my answer. Ha!

It was in August of 1979 and they were playing the Dodgers. I'm thinking it was a crap game all around, since Brock took the night off, Bob Forsch wasn't pitching, it was raining and the Cardinals got like 2 hits. Well, I guess it was okay for my sister the Dodgers fan.

So now you have all the info you need. Go get it!

I used to listen to the Cardinal games on the radio back then. That was around the time Lou Brock got his 3,000th hit.

Looks like l2j got your game. That was the day after Brock got his 3,000th hit.

I was at the game where Tony Gwynn got 3 hits to pull up to 2,998 (#2,996 was one of the 11 grand slams I've seen). He got one more hit the next day before getting #3,000 in.... well, etaoin knows where. They don't play baseball there anymore....

Busch Stadium? --Bob

Well, if he would've gotten #3,000 here, then that would still be correct. But you can fish on the site where Tony Gwynn got his 2,999th hit.

Yes, 3 years after the fact, the site of old Busch is still just a gigantic hole in the middle of downtown, and I hope it stays that way for a looooong time to serve the greedy city and owners right....

I'm such a dumdum. I never actually asked my question. Ha! I was wanting to know what feat Lou Brock accomplished that I was a day too late to witness.

I thought about 3000 hits, but whatever website I looked at said that was in 1978. I hate the internet.

OMG, they have boxscores for every game ever played on that site! I take it back, I love the internet! Because I'm such a goob that I'm going to have to dig out my old scorebooks and find those games and see if I made any mistakes. Ha!

I was also going to ask if they still played in Busch Memorial, but I see that question has been answered. See, I really don't follow baseball at all anymore!

In fact, I'm in the midst of finally going through all my books that have been packed in boxes since I moved and I have a whole box of old Baseball Almanac books from the 70's and 80's (and a couple from the 50's that were my mom's) and I don't even have an interest in thumbing back to see what the team forecast was for the Pirates in 1977. So I'm just going to put them all up on ebay.

I'm keeping my Yaz, Conigliaro, Williams and Bill Lee autobiographies, though. I'm not that crazy!

Oh, and I forgot to thank all who helped out, there. I see that the game where Brock got 3k was against the Cubs. Now I remember another reason why I was pissed. The reason we went to the game the next night was because it was the Dodgers and my sister was a Dodgers fan.

Since Busch is gone, I'll have to look for my pictures I took then, I think I took one that showed the Arch in the background. Now if I find my program from the game in one of the boxes, it'll probably have my "I was there when Lou Brock hit 3k" certificate in it!

Retrosheet (retrosheet.org) was the first to compile boxscores. Baseball Reference (the site l2j linked to) took that work and kicked it up a notch. You can darm near completely recount any game, pitch for pitch, from a BR boxscore.

You can have hours of fun looking at stuff on either site....

I don't know about HOURS of fun. But perhaps I could interest you in the Complete Handbook of Baseball yearly editions from 1977-86? And just who was Zander Hollander anyway?

If you'd have been around when I was running Take Me Out To The Ballgame, you'd know that my baseball knowledge is largely centered around the last 2 decades. I was given RBI Baseball for the Nintendo for my 13th birthday in 1988, and that is what really got me into baseball. It is ironic that the 2 guys who would emerge as my favorite players for years from that game, Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, are now 2 players who I absolutely cannot stand, especially Big Mac....

And ever since I found out just about anything I want to know about baseball can be found online, all my baseball books have sat around and collected dust....
