Revising my opinion

#51 Post by mellytu74 » Thu Aug 30, 2018 6:49 am

REVISION --

OK. I have watched the DeSantis interview several times.

I have watched Michael Steele's response.

I have read Fox News' pretty rapid response that it does not condone the language used.

I watched Gillum say "I believe the Congressman can be better than this." And lead off the answer with, "Let me be articulate here..."

Sadly, this was not a guy who got tongue-tied.

And, if DeSantis didn't mean it in a way that could be misconstrued, why didn't DeSantis just come out shortly thereafter and say, "I didn't mean it as a slur. I am truly sorry." That he didn't do that is distressing.

[From a corporate communication standpoint, having your spokesman come out and call it "absurd" doesn't do anything to diffuse the situation. OR bring the focus back to the issues, which is what the spokesman said the Congressman wants to do. If they want the kerfluffle to die down, the spokesperson should have said something like the above statement. Unless they don't/didn't want it to die down, which is a completely different strategy.]

And, in the end, I have not heard "monkey it up" as a phrase. Monkey wrench, monkey around, all sorts of monkey stuff. Not that.

Democrats, especially in swing states or districts, have had a disturbing tendency to nominate "safe" candidates... e.g., more centrist candidates that they think will attract moderate Republicans and independents. It hasn't worked here in Georgia and it hasn't worked in Florida governor's races. The Georgia Democrats could exhume Lester Maddox and nominate him and the Republicans would just trot out their usual Nancy Pelosi stock footage.

I think what the Democrats need to do is to stop looking at "safe" candidates and look at candidates who can drum up enthusiasm and motivate younger and minority voters to actually show up. We've done this here in Georgia with Stacy Abrams, and it looks like Gillum is the same type of candidate. He was running a distant fourth in most polls in Florida a week before the election and won. Most of the positions that Abrams and Gillum take are popular with a lot of voters when they have a chance to actually describe them rather than have them thrown in their faces by Republican sound bites. It's getting those not-always-likely voters out that can make the difference.

It's not a smear when they really did say those things and really do have those attitudes. That's why it worked so well.

This is part of the price the Republican Party pays when its head clearly caters to racist voters. The candidates he endorses often think it's a winning strategy for them as well. --Bob

I'm not aware of any Democratic politicians or anyone on this Bored who does that. I'd point out something that you apparently have a difficult time grasping and that is that many people display some racial bias of which they may be unaware, and saying that is not accusing them of being a racist.

DeSantis was going for something like "mess it up" and was, perhaps, drifting toward eff it up or something unacceptable.

So, he switched gears and thought of saying something like "throw a monkey wrench into," which is a pretty long-standing phrase in my neck of the woods.

Except it didn't come out that way.

I am the last person in the world who would defend a Donald Trump supporter who DID say something truly racist.

I think he just got tongue-tied. I do not think there was racist intent here -- although it certainly did not come out well.
Sorry, melly, but now that I've seen the video (I had been relying on transcripts), I can't agree. His delivery was absolutely smooth and unhesitating, with no indication at all that he was stumbling over words. Like former RNC head Michael Steele, I don't see any reason to give him the benefit of the doubt on this. I think he said exactly what he intended to say.

I'll add the points made by Steele. In the preceding sentences, DeSantis made a point of Gillis being "articulate" and said he "performed well." These are not points I see made about white professional politicians because they're taken for granted. Making those points about a black candidate is intended to suggest that it's surprising that a black candidate would be articulate or perform well. --Bob

You have changed the subject. I was talking about calling out specific candidates based on their words and actions. And I was pointing out that a lot of Republican candidates (including but not limited to Donny) are perfectly comfortable appealing to racists.

That’s different from saying that all of the people supporting those candidates are racist. It does mean, though, that those supporters are willing to support a candidate who is deliberately appealing to racists. In my view, that support enables racism. —Bob

Here's the deal. The big three libholes on this bored, bob-tel, aSSShole and BJ, never digest anything that is presented to them, no matter how many times or however spelled out it is to them. No political debate on this bored ever advances, because it's like Groundhog Day. The next day it starts all over, and you have to refute the same stupidity all over again.

Saying the word 'monkey' is NOT an excuse for branding anyone a 'racist'. That is a serious allegation that you libholes have made trivial and meaningless by using it so much as a tool. If you want to brand DeSantis a racist, cite anything he has DONE to support that epithet. None of you have addressed that point or have even acknowledged it as a possibility. You cite this person or that article that supports your stance, and ignore or marginalize those that don't

I think I understand trump and why he does what he does. He knows that nothing logical or reasonable he could say would ever be acknowledged or get through to the people who are living in the liberal hate trump echo chamber. So he just mocks them, counter-attacks the stupid attacks they throw at him, and then just goes and does what he can to do what he wants to get done.

I will try that here, because trying to reason with these libholes is just a waste of time. They're just a bunch of monkeys.

Because whether Joe Biden or anyone else may have said something untoward (and I don't think Biden ever used the phrase "monkey it up" when talking about Obama) has no bearing on whether these particular comments were a dog whistle.

But if you're on that kick, you'll note that Biden issued a prompt apology (which DeSantis has not done), which was accepted by Obama.

He certainly did apologize. In a subsequent statement, he used the word 'porcupine', which is a dog-whistle word which means "I'm sorry". There, it's all settled.
I've never seen you type that word. You still owe me 2 porcupines.

This is a classic example of where it is inconvenient for the proponents of "Whataboutism" that history did not start this morning, so we have to artificially pretend that it did and set the goalposts on their terms (whatever those terms might be).

Well, once the monkey is out of the cage, it's not too difficult to find earlier instances of racism. In DeSantis' case, he was an administrator on a well-known right wing Facebook group that is filled with racially charged comments. (Note, he wasn't just a member, he was an administrator for the group up until this morning).

https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/ron- ... e-10682854

That didn't take very long at all. It's not that DeSantis has been hiding his past; it's that people haven't invested a lot of time looking for it, because contrary to what you and the rest of Trump's band of useful idiots think, left wingers don't spend all their time looking for possible instances of racism on the part of every Republican elected official. Most of the time, as with DeSantis, Republicans are very willing to rub everyone's noses in it, knowing that people like you will rush to his defense.

He doesn't understand the concept of hypocrisy. I think it's a pre-requisite to being a liberal, since your whole worldview is a contradiction.
This is a classic example of where it is inconvenient for the proponents of "Whataboutism" that history did not start this morning, so we have to artificially pretend that it did and set the goalposts on their terms (whatever those terms might be).
Well, I think it's more of an Art-Deco example, rather than classic.

Apparently, there's some hope that the voters of Florida, unlike Flock and Spock, will see through this nonsense. I would note that any poll like is highly prone to error simply because of the polling conditions themselves:

That is a serious allegation that you libholes have made trivial and meaningless by using it so much as a tool. If you want to brand DeSantis a racist, cite anything he has DONE to support that epithet.

Oh yes, the Tea Party is full of racists. If I recall, it is a branch of the KKK. I used to go to Tea Party rallies. We would jump up and down and shout MONKEY! MONKEY! for hours. They would distribute the dog whistle codebook, then we would pledge allegiance to David Duke. Then we would clean up the area, pledge to oppress someone before the next meeting, and go home. You can cite the SPLC.
